A reloadable, prepaid debit card is a beautiful thing. With one of those handy cards you can easily maintain a budget while staying within your means. No worrying about digging yourself deeper into debt when using a prepaid debit card. I’m a big fan of giving a prepaid credit card as a gift but I've run into a problem with them, they usually have so many restrictions they can’t be used for most travel, which is my lifeblood. The ones I've used can’t be used for rental cars, airline tickets, or hotels. My friends at AchieveCard are offering budget-minded consumers a prepaid MasterCard that can be used for domestic and international travel. Yay!
The prepaid debit card is pretty simple in how it works but be advised there is a fee associated with it, $29.95 for the application then $7.95 monthly fee. Honestly, I’m not a big proponent of paying for anything but I can see that this card would be great for those with really bad credit and can’t get their own credit card. It’s much safer than carrying cash and can be reloaded at retailers as CVS and Wal-Mart through purchasing a Green Dot Money Pak. Or, portion of a paycheck can be deposited directly into this card which also doubles as a prepaid credit card.
This prepaid MasterCard is also great for those traveling abroad. The prepaid credit card has a $4.95 ATM withdrawal fee (or if in the U.K., called a “cash point machine”) and $1.00 plus MasterCard conversion fee for international transactions and from what I recall, that’s a pretty good deal.
