One of the coolest things I saw this summer was the Naples Botanical Garden (Naples, Fla.) and a pretty awesome mosaic mural. There's just something about mosaic tiles that floats my boat.

Have ya noticed there's a silver lining in the economy and people are returning to their needs list beyond their wants list? This includes finishing that kitchen or bathroom project which is where a company like Eden Mosaic Tile serves as a resource, which happens to be supporting my travel habit.

I imagine a man cave's restroom would be decked out with metal mosaic tile with manly, slick colors of black, silver and perhaps dark blue. Personally, if I were redoing a bathroom, I'd go with crisp white with black interspersed for a classic vintage look.

Chinese Chestnuts and Glass Pumpkin

Fall is my favorite season. A native of Western New York and now a Floridian, autumn just isn't the same down here.

A few weeks back my mom sent my favorite fall treat - Chinese chestnuts from the family backyard. It's always a game picking them up before the squirrels and deer do.

I'm not too versed in what to do with them other than slice the shell and roast em in the oven (on 350 F degrees) until the shells have peeled back and the exposed nut is lightly browned. Peel them (little pieces always get underneath my fingernails and cut up my fingers - ouch!), dip in melted butter, sprinkle with salt and savor.

Yum, yum!

I did that with some but wanted to try something different so I found this recipe for Candied Chestnuts which basically consists of chestnuts, water, sugar and vanilla. Apparently, this is a popular delicacy in France. Ooo, la, la.

Now, what the recipe doesn't explain is what to do with the chestnuts first. It discusses boiling them but doesn't say whether in the shells or not.

Having made the recipe I'm thinking I should have roasted them then boiled them because it was a heck of a time getting them out of the shells after being boiled. I ended up breaking about half of them.

The Candied Chestnuts recipe then calls for boiling the chestnuts in the water, sugar, vanilla solution. Okay, fine.

But then, the nuts are stored in the fridge between 12 and 24 hours then boiled again and the process is repeated for a few days.

Once the nuts have absorbed the sugary sweetness (or as the French call it, "marron glacé"), to your liking, place them on parchment paper on a cookie sheet in a 275 F degree pre-heated oven and turn off the heat. The nuts should dry until, well, until dry on the outside.


Candied Chinese Chestnuts

Honestly, I don't think the marron glacé penetrated all the way through the nut but the exterior sure is sweet. The center is still soft and holds the nutty flavor.

I've sealed them up and have them in the freezer, waiting to share them at Christmas. I'll probably pop them back in the over to firm up a little.

I've been dealingwith a medical situation the past month and I'm grateful for having excellenthealth insurance picking up the tab. I also live in a popular retirementdestination where value is king. Accordingto an Aug. 2008 report by the Kaiser Family Foundation called, “ExaminingSources of Coverage Among Medicare Beneficiaries: Supplemental Insurance,Medicare Advantage, and Prescription Drug Coverage,” as of 2006, 18 percent ofMedicare beneficiaries had a Medigap policy.

Um, okay. I realize that's about five years ago but thatdoesn't seem like a whole heck of a lot of people and this Medigap stuffalready sounds confusing. Luckily, there are some resources on the web to helpyou find the best plan, such as what Kaiser Permanente offers.It's best to compare Medigap plans and find the best one for yourneeds.

Remember, I workin the tourism industry and am not an expert on medical insurance or Medicare supplements. I'm just like you,sharing what I learn and researching before I make an educated purchase. AndI'm sure hoping this Medicare thing is figured out when it’s time for me tosign up.

Busy, Busy, Busy as a Bee

Sorry I haven't had much to say over here lately, or over on www.SoloTravelGirl.com, life is moving at 1,000 mph and I'm catching what I can. I do wish there was a way to tap my brain with some kind of USB cable and download my thoughts while I sleep into a blog post. There's so much up there waiting to be shared.

In due time, you'll be reading more either here or there.

Guess I can share yesterday was a good mail day, received a $5 survey check, $4.98 rebate check from Bissell Stomp 'n Go Pads (they work okay, especially for kitty throw up; I'm buying another pack), coupon for a free Tai Pei entree and couple of photos on Canvas via Canvas People. See, I'm trying to spend my money smarter and I found these deals via Freebies4Mom.com and Time2SaveWorkshops.com.Check 'em out.

I also saved more than $12 on groceries today with things I needed. I didn't save 90 percent on my bill but every bit helps.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott has rattled some anthropologists' cages recently by stating he wants to see people pursuing degrees in technology and science rather than anthropology degrees. Having Fun with My New Zoku Quick Pop Maker!

When I attended the Travel Blog Exchange (TBEX) conference in Vancouver last June, attendees received admission to EAT! Vancouver, a consumer foodie show also taking place at the convention center.

It's there I was introduced to the Zoku Quick Pop Maker - a quick and relatively easy way to make gourmet frozen treats on sticks. The gals giving the demonstrations made it look so easy.

Zoku Quick Pop Maker - So Simple

All they did was pour juice into the little box and within minutes, frozen treats popped out. I thought it'd be fun to own one and experiment with my own concoctions, until I saw the price tag, just under $50.

Over the weekend I headed up to Sarasota to use a Sur La Table gift card. Having NEVER shopped the store, I had no idea what I wanted until (insert angels singing) I glanced over to a corner and saw the Zoku on display.

I'm the Kid

It's something I wouldn't purchase on my own and really, it's not very practical but it's loads of fun! The clerk asked if I had kids because "kids just love it."

"No," I told her and quickly added I would have to try it with my niece and nephew. I said this because I was embarrassed to admit this was for my own personal enjoyment - and any of my visitors. I also rationed I'd make healthier desserts.

Strawberry Lemonade with Hint of Basil Pop

My first (and only) experiment has been making strawberry lemonade pops with a hint of basil. Basically, you freeze the unit at least for 24 hours, then when ready, make your mixture (there's a Zoku Quick Pops recipe book available for purchase, too, which I picked up), place the special sticks in the unit, pour and wait. After about 5 minutes, my pops were ready. Use the handy dandy orange screw thing to pull out the sticks then place the drip cups on and enjoy.

Zoku makes three frozen pops at a time and since I won't (admittedly) eat three pops in a sitting, I placed the other two in the freezer. Of course, there's a special freezer container to store the pops, along with a host of other accessories. Well, this will make Christmas gift buying for me easy.

I tried to make a second batch by adding limoncello but they didn't freeze. Either the unit wasn't cold enough or I had too much alcohol in the mixture.

Simply, my new Zoku is fun and I'm looking forward to trying some of the recipes in the book and inventing my own flavors. I don't have exact measurements but this is what I did for the strawberry lemonade with a hint of basil:

Mashed four strawberries with four sliced basil leaves and about 1 Tablespoon of lemonade.
Poured it all into a measuring cup and added more lemonade to equal 3/4 cup.

Up until Friday night I didn't understand the fascination with musical artist Justin Bieber. Yeah, he seemed like just another pretty face fans who cranked out danceable tunes and enamored fans across the globe. Having been told Bieber's "Never Say Never"movie is a great marketing flick, I rented it and...

OMG - I'm in love with Justin Bieber! Seriously, I can't believe I just admitted that. Wait! This is not in a creepy kind of way. That kid seems so genuine, fun, smart and plain adorable. I now understand why my mom is a Clay Aiken fan and an older friend is a big Justin Timberlake fan.

What impressed me watching "Never Say Never" was how the 17-year-old performer connects with his fans (free concert tickets, meet and greet, replying to Twitter messages, etc.) and how family seems important (staying with his grandparents when he played a concert in his hometown). He appears to enjoy entertaining while being grounded and grateful for what he's achieved.

He also never gave up on his dreams. Granted, he's only 17, signed a record deal when he was 15 after being discovered on YouTube. He has a whole life of dreams ahead of him.

Growing up in the 1980s, I adored Duran Duran and I wrote them fan letters with hopes of an autographed photo. Instead, I received a brochure with pricing levels for their fan club. Bieber appears to be different because he knows his fans put him where he is. Other bands, as Duran Duran, feel they were entitled to their success rather than appreciate who put them there.

Bieber is just refreshing. Seriously. Watch "Never Say Never."

So yeah, I'm officially coming out as a Justin Bieber fan. What are ya going to say about it?

Online Universities Making It Easier to Get Ahead

Online Universities are making it easier for people like me who have full-time jobs extending beyond the typical 9 to 5, Monday through Friday gig, to get educated. For others, throw in taking care of family and earning a college degree seems almost impossible. But thank you technology! The site Find Your Education, a relatively new education aggregate, is supporting my travel habit in exchange for sharing my thoughts.

Let's face it (and it pains me to say it) but the economy is barely turning around and I fear the second wave (or third?) of layoffs are closer than we may think. I read an article earlier this month stating although Florida's unemployment rate is high (as of June 2011 it's 10.6 %, Source: Google Public Data Explorer) there is a strong demand to fill vacancies in information technology, however, those skilled people aren't in the state.

What to do to get ahead in this case? Go back to school to learn necessary skills to fill those job vacancies. And, taking classes online affords some flexibility by offering learning at your own pace. This can be achieved with online degree programs in information technology.

How to pay for higher education? Scholarships, grants and student aid are available. Complete an application for federal student aid on the Federal Student Aid College Finder website (http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/).

Muddling through Mango Madness

If you live in Florida then you know mangoes are bountiful this year. In the last two weeks I've received about 50 of the luscious tropical fruit and am running out of ideas on what to do with them.

I've made three batches of mango chutney using this recipe on Simply Recipes (simplyrecipes.com), a batch of mango sorbet using this recipe on All Recipes (allrecipes.com) and took my grandma' rhubarb tort recipe (which is on my Solo Travel Girl blog) and tossed in the 2 cups of chopped rhubarb I had with 3 mangoes. Rather than one big torte I made these in cupcake papers.

I still have about 2 dozen mangoes left. Any ideas other than eating them? More chutney? Refreshing sorbet? All of these are easy to make it's just a pain cutting mangoes.

Message to Today’s Youth: Hug Your Summer

Growing up, we didn’t have a swimming pool in the backyard but our neighbors down the street had the most beautiful pool I had ever seen in my 10 years or so of being alive. It’s in ground, has an amoeba shape, is equipped with a hot tub and has one of those solar swimming pool covers.

Calling home tonight I learned my niece and nephew, who are staying with my parents for a few weeks this summer, have been cooling off this summer in the same pool I grew up with 30 years ago. They swim with children spawned from my childhood friends. I imagine they play the same games we did such as Marco Polo and…I really can’t think of what else we played other than cannon balling into the water.

Ah. The lazy days of summer, where have you gone? If any kids are out there reading this, embrace your youth with a giant bear hug and savor every moment because it’s true what they say, the older you get the quicker time flies.

One Minute with Andre Reed, Former Buffalo Bills Wide Receiver, during His Visit to Clarence, N.Y.

I was up in Buffalo over the weekend for a childhood friend's wedding and my itinerary was jam packed into my less-than-48-hour visit. Planned was a visit with another childhood friend, Annette, who recently donated her kidney to her niece, and drive to Western Pennsylvania for the wedding. En route, my mom informed me Andre Reed, former Buffalo Bills wide receiver (1985 – 1999), was going to be in town for a public appearance.

I couldn't miss his visit because the Bills were part of my childhood and his appearance was practically down the road at a culinary shop called The Podge. (10205 Main St., Clarence, N.Y., Tel: (716) 759-2080)

Reed, who HAS to be Hall of Fame-bound, was promoting his all purpose cooking sauce called Over the Middle. I'm told it’s delicious on burgers, steak and chicken and that it's a barbecue and steak sauce rolled into one.

I picked up a few bottles of Reed's sauce and while he signed them, I asked him if it was good being back in Buffalo.

"Always good to be back in Buffalo," he told me. "If I had a dime for every time someone told me I wish you were playing…it’s a nice thing."

For every bottle of Over the Middle sauce sold in Western New York a donation is made to Kids Escaping Drugs. KED's mission is to raise, manage and distribute funds for the development and support of facilities, education and prevention programs for adolescents and their families in Western New York suffering from alcohol and drug dependency/addiction.

I'm looking forward to tasting Reed's sauce but hope I can save his autograph on the bottle.

Well Hello There. It's Been a While, Huh?

Yeah, yeah. I realize it's been quite a while since I've last posted over here. How many times have you read that on a blog?

Well, I've been busy, busy and have been posting over on my Solo Travel Girl blog. You should check it out sometime.

The highlight of life lately is the upcoming space shuttle Endeavour launch on Monday. It's Endeavour's last liftoff and the second-to-last NASA space shuttle launch ever! I'll be viewing it about as close as the public can - in the press area.
Who ever thought Twitter would provide groovy access to something? Long story short, I was one of 150 Twitterers selected to participate in the NASA Tweetup for the launch, which met the end of April for two days, when Endeavour was suppose to launch.

Although we didn't get to see the shuttle launch then, it was AMAZING! It included hearing and meeting NASA astronauts, engineers, scientists and staff who make things happen.

Chocolate Chip Cookies Stuffed with Girl Scout Thin Mints - Oh Yeah!

Yeah, you read right. Chocolate Chip Cookies stuffed with Girl Scout Thin Mints. And yeah, they are as sinfully delicious as the name implies.

Let me begin by saying yes, I'm still working out with a trainer at the gym. I haven't lost much weight (about 8 or 9 pounds) but I've lost at least a dress size (the clothing I was oozing over is now too big) and I'm a whole lot stronger. I'm writing this as pain from yesterday's workout settles in.

Bottom line, I have no business baking sinfully delicious cookies but when I read about Oreo Stuffed Chocolate Chip Cookies on Amadeleine yesterday, I knew what I'd be doing on this Friday night - baking! (Be sure to check out Amadeleine's recipe and instructions).

Now, since this is March, two things are on my mind: McDonald's Shamrock Shakes (my father used to bring them home on St. Patrick's Day, what a treat!) and Girl Scout cookies.

I had two, $5 Target gift cards (from Target's awesome sales) so picked up Oreos and Toll House Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough (I just don't have time for baking from scratch) on the drive home to work. I swung by Walmart hoping the Girl Scouts were out selling cookies and sure enough, there they were.

To make the cookies, I encased a Thin Mint in chocolate chip cookie dough and did the same with an Oreo. Plopped them on a cookie sheet, baked them for about 18 to 20 minutes and cooled them on a wire rack.

If you check out the original recipe and see my final cookies, mine don't look as pretty but my, oh my! The chocolate chip cookies stuffed with Girl Scout thin mints are pretty rockin'!

Letter from U.S. Public Health Service Promises $30 to Participate in Study: Scam or Legit?

At the beginning of the year I received a letter from the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) stating it's conducting a national study on health-related issues and my address was randomly selected along with more than 200,000 others. The letter said Research Triangle Institute (RTI) is contracted to conduct the study and a representative will visit me.

The letter provided the interviewer's name and stated she'd have an identification badge. All members of my household (me) would be asked a few questions and if qualified, I'd be asked to complete a survey and be compensated $30.

With all the scams going around I wasn't sure if this was legit. I Googled the phone number provided (800-848-4079) and found it did belong to Research Triangle Institute. I also found some message boards where users posted they didn't think it sounded legit and kind of scammy.

I forgot about it until last night, around 6:30 the doorbell rang. It was the woman mentioned in the letter. She had an identification badge and asked me a few questions in which she punched the answers into her magic hand-held device. Questions were basic - my age, ethnicity and whether I lived here full-time.

Turns out the 2011 National Survey on Drug Use and Health needed more 40-year-old, Caucasian women so I was selected to take the hour-long survey and I was chosen to represent about 4,500 others in the United States. Whoa! The responsibility!

The interviewer went out to her car and returned with a computer and box of papers. We set up shop on my dining room table where she asked me questions and I completed questions on the computer. She was professional and fun and she assured me responses are kept confidential. She never asked to leave the dining area so I know she wasn't casing my place.

Some of the results are used to determine what types of medical services are needed in specific communities so just like the U.S. Census, participating is important.

I was never once asked for my name or social security number and I received $30 cash so I'm pretty confident this is not a scam. If it was a man conducting the interviewing not sure if I would have let him in.

What's Cooking? Snowball Cupcakes

My Mom is one of the creative and best cooks I know. She's always trying new dishes. When I visited over Christmas she prepared a new dessert for the family called a Snowball Cake. I took the recipe and made cupcakes for an office birthday party last week.

Following is the recipe, which she saved from the Buffalo News, and my modifications.
1 Angel Food Cake
1 Pint Heavy Cream
1.5 Tablespoons Unflavored Gelatin
4 Tablespoons Cold Water
1 Cup Boiling Water
1.5 Cups Orange Juice
1 Tablespoon Lemon Juice
1 Cup Granulated Sugar
Dash of Salt
8 Ounce Bag of Shredded Coconut

Soften gelatin in cold water.
Add to boiling water and stir.
Add sugar and salt, stir thoroughly.
Add orange and lemon juices, stir.
Refrigerate until mixture begins to thicken (It doesn't take "that" long.)
Beat heavy cream until it's the consistency of whipped cream and fold half of it into the gelatin mixture.

Add sugar to taste to the remainder whipped cream and set aside.

Shred the Angel Food Cake with hands into small bits and place in the gelatin/whipped cream mixture.

Line a muffin/cupcake tin with paper baking cups.
Pour (I used a ladle) mixture into baking cups and refrigerate overnight.
When ready to serve, top with whipped cream and add shredded coconut.

I didn't add coconut to every cupcake since I know some people aren't fans.

The result is a light and refreshing treat. It has a jello-y consistency and isn't heavy. Best of all, there's no baking involved! You can pick up a pre-baked Angel Food Cake from any grocery store.

Yowza! Can't believe this is my 1,000th post on this blog AND it's 2011! My, oh my. Where has the time gone?

I really don't have anything profound to say to mark this occasion other than thank you for following, reading and commenting during the past five-and-a-half-years of this blog's life. To say it's been a roller coaster is an understatement.

But, it's a new year with new opportunities. To kick off 2011, I watched the Twilight Zone marathon on Syfy (which was interrupted by WWE's RAW on Friday night) and spent most of the weekend at home, trying to clean and downsize. Over the course of the weekend I filled a huge garbage bag with trash, recycled loads of plastic, paper and glass and took two garbage bags full of documents to be shredded. I deep-cleaned my bathroom (almost as well as my mom does) and did about four loads of laundry.

I made a rockin' bowl of vegetarian chili, found in the January issue of Real Simple (before recycling it), met up with a friend for lunch, watched football and a movie at another friend's house and had a great conversation with a longtime Yellowstone pal.

After all this, I still don't feel accomplished. My apartment still looks like it's full of stuff - and it is. I just need to chip away because later in the year I want to buy a house and want to move as little as possible.

But moving right along...Happy New Year!

Slow-Cooker Vegetarian Chili Recipe from Real Simple- if you'd like to try it yourself, head on over to Real Simple for the recipe. I followed it to the tee with the exception of the sour cream and tortilla chips. No need for them but did top it off with radishes and scallions. The radishes seem a bit strange but tastes good. This recipe has the right amount of spicy, heat kick and I'll definitely be making it again.

Success: Candy Cane Chocolate Fudge from Woman's Day Magazine

I love weekends. It gives me the opportunity to experiment in the kitchen and this weekend I tried two new recipes. One was a success, the Candy Cane Chocolate Fudge recipe from the Dec. 2010 issue of Woman's Day magazine.

*whew!* I'm coming down from the sugar rush of sampling this recipe. Yum-o!

The other recipe I tried was a fail, Crispy Parmesan Chickpeas. It was also from the same Woman's Day issue. I'll post about that one later in the week so let's focus on the Candy Cane Chocolate Fudge.

Candy Cane Chocolate Fudge Recipe, Woman's Day, Dec. 2010

I'm not going to post the recipe because you can find on Woman's Day but will share the one change I made...when we get there.

Pictured up top are the candy canes I smashed with my trusty hammer. Remember this post photo from last year's holiday preparations?

I melted the ingredients until smooth (pictured above) then poured them into two parchment-lined 8" pans (pictured below).

Note: Rather than bittersweet chocolate chips I used semi-sweet - just because I couldn't find bittersweet at Wal-mart.

Before I sprinkled on the crushed candy canes (I used 7 regular sized canes vs. the recommend 8), I sprinkled flaked sea salt onto one of the pans of fudge. Then set both in the refrigerator for about four hours.

Unfortunately I'm a fan of salt and it seems to enrich flavor when combined with chocolate. I thought the sweetness of the peppermint and chocolate would meld well.

Does the salt work? Yes. It didn't give the fudge an overly salty flavor but enhanced the flavors and cut the sweet edge out.

Below is the final presentation. Ain't it pretty?

Now I need to figure out who to give these to because there is no way I'm going to eat one pan of fudge (and admit it).

Round 2 of Boot Camp, Pie Confession and What I've Lost

The first session of boot camp ended last week but I missed it due to work and Thanksgiving travels. I did well sticking to the nutrition plan and exercising but last week, I caved in to fast food (had coupons for free things) and ate, and ate, and ate all weekend.

That's Right. I Ate the Whole Thing.
I confessed to my trainer I ate a whole pie over the weekend - bourbon, chocolate and pecan. I don't want to know how many calories were in it. I know it was bad - I'm feeling the sugar crash this week. At least I confessed and can move forward.

So today was the weigh-in for the new session. I've lost half a pound since the last weigh in! I'm not using an exclamation point because it's good, I'm using it because it sucks! Granted, I lost 9 pounds before the last weigh in.

What I've Lost
The up side, I've lost 3% in body fat meaning 6 pounds of fat have converted to muscle. This, I'm happy about and so was my trainer.

What I've Gained
As for today's training session, I've discovered I hate something more than the boxing session - the hanging-by-my-arms-from-a-bar-doing-100-knee-tuck exercise. Seems easy but after 30 knee lifts, feels as though my body is lifting cement. Surprisingly, I did it and for that I'm proud.

I'm also finding my confidence in the gym - conversing with the gym rats. I know what free weights are and I know how to use 'em. Sort of. I'm getting there.

We also worked on abs and arms tonight and it's taking everything in me to type this blog post - my arms and hands feel like jello. Can't wait for the next session.

Orange Zesty Twist to Kentucky Bourbon Chocolate Pecan Pie

I know the real reason coworkers at my previous employer loved me. It wasn't my free-spirit, work ethic or sense of humor. No. It was my Kentucky bourbon chocolate pecan pie at Thanksgiving. I discovered that when I announced I was leaving a few fans asked for me to bake the pie for my farewell party.

I'm heading to my cousin's for this Thanksgiving and last night while baking a regular pecan pie and a Kentucky bourbon chocolate pecan pie, I experimented with Florida oranges. I always have left over mixture - guess it's because I pie regular pie crusts vs. deep dish and wasn't sure what to do with it. I planned to make a cranberry and orange mixture (chutney???) to keep at home and decided to use the orange as a shell to cook left over pie mixture.

I sliced off the top of the orange and hallowed out the interior to place in the food processor with the cranberries. I poured the mixture in and baked it at 350 degrees for about 25 minute.

The verdict? DELISH! Juice from the orange infused the mixture for a nice balance of flavors. It wasn't overly orange and I was surprised how good it tasted with the chocolate.

A little bonus: the oranges were FREE from a friend's yard. The joys of living in Florida.

Here's my Kentucky Bourbon Chocolate Pecan Pie Recipe

Heat oven to 350 degrees F.

1 Frozen Pie Shell (I used Pillsbury last night, any will do. If you're adventurous, feel free to make your own but why make things difficult?)

Pie Filling
2/3 cup sugar
1/2 cup margarine, melted
3/4 cup corn syrup
1/4 cup bourbon
3 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
1 1/4 cup pecan halves
1 cup chopped chocolate (I used chopped Hershey Kisses I had in the freezer; chocolate chips work well)

1. Beat eggs in mixing bowl with hand mixer 'til blended (about 30 seconds)
2. Stir in sugar, margarine, corn syrup, bourbon and vanilla.
3. Stir in pecans and chocolate.
4. Pour in frozen pie shell.
5. Cover pie shell edges with aluminum foil, place in oven for 20 minutes.
6. Remove foil and continue cooking for 20 to 25 minutes until inserted knife (I use a wood chopstick) comes out clean.
7. Cool on rack.
8. Enjoy!

"You Want Me to Do What?"

"You want me to do what?" I said to my fitness trainer tonight when he told me to lift my legs and touch my ears with my feet. Mind you, I was already on the floor resting comfortably on a mat after doing lunges, squats and rock climbers, among other sweat-pouring drills.

Fitness trainers are meant to push people's comfort zones and realize your potential. That's how you get fit. When I was asked to do what I thought was impossible, lift my legs and touch my ears with my feet, I thought he was crazy. Amazingly, I did it without breaking my neck.

So how is boot camp going? This started week 4 and so far, so good. Each workout has been getting progressively difficult and each day is different. Last Thursday my thighs hurt so bad from Tuesday's and Thursday's workouts, I limped around as if I had a real injury. It was the kind of pain when you walk down the stairs you feel as though your leg muscles are going to split because they feel so tight.

The sessions have been a mix of strength training, boxing, yoga and other activities I'm not sure what you call them. I can't remember sweating so much so quickly. Not even with roller derby, but I guess wearing a helmet soaks things up.

Have I lost weight? I think so. I've avoided the official scale but will have a weigh-in Thursday along with a check of my body mass index. Clothing is beginning to loosen and the other boot camp participants and the trainer said they could tell I've lost some.

I certainly hope so. I've been doing my best to stick to a high-protein, low carb diet eating 6 small meals a day including drinking Myoplex Light after workouts - which I quite like. I know my friends McDonald's, Chick-fil-A, and CiCi's Pizza miss me. I've been either bringing in my own meals or visiting Subway and Wendy's for my protein fix.

I've been doing so well I'm perplexed about Thursday. I have the day off and was considering a trip to Epcot for the Food & Wine Festival but worry I'll over do it. Sunday I may join a tour of a Fort Myers farmers market, one that is traditionally Hispanic. I'm learning to rethink what I put in my body, just hope I have the strength to resist temptation which is difficult for a foodie.

One Week of Boot Camp and I Haven't Puked

"You'll probably throw up."

Those were the words told to me by a male participant of the weight loss boot camp at my gym. Last Thursday was my first day attending and I was one class behind the others because business travel had me out of town for the initial class. A female participant had puked so it was only natural I, the newbie, would do the same.

"Good to know," I said.

Since then I've survived two other classes (three in total) and I have successfully held my lunch. Although, I admit to coming close.

How do I feel? Tonight my body feels tired. Like last Thursday, aches are beginning to settle in. It was upper body day where I had to punch the pads the trainer held. Boy, is that hard! Other activities were involved, too.

Leg day is on Tuesday. It was hard and I don't recall dripping sweat so much before but my legs really didn't hurt afterward. They felt stiff and heavy. Maybe it's roller derby training? Or maybe the protein shakes I've been consuming?

Mentally, I'm feeling great. For the past week I've been on the program's nutritional plan, too. It was hard the first couple of days. I enjoy cooking and enjoy eating so being regulated six small meals a day which consist of three of this, four of that and a teaspoon of something else has taken some getting used to.

Honestly, I think my stomach has shrunk because an apple with a teaspoon of natural peanut butter is filling. I still have headaches but they are waning and I don't have cravings for tasty food.

If scales at my doctor's office and the gym are accurate, I'm excited about the weight loss after the first five days. If they're not, well, I'll find out tomorrow how much I've lost in the past week.

Attempt at Making Baked Caramel Apple Donuts

I came across a blog called "Shutterbean" today and a recipe for baked caramel apple donuts. Yes. I know. Sounds sinfully delicious.

Last January when visiting Buffalo I made my Mom stop at Tim Hortons for a donut. My choice: apple fritter filled with caramel. Yes. It was sinfully delish.

So, I just *had* to try caramel apple donuts recipe. My pantry had most of the items and I picked up the rest at Walmart including a mini-bunt cake pan. They didn't have any donut pans and since I didn't want to wait, I found what I thought was the next best thing.

I'm not going to include the recipe but you can head over to Shutterbean to pick it up. And be sure to take a look at her photos. Then compare it to the one at the top of this post.

Um, yeah. I had an issue and didn't cool the baked goodies before taking them out of the pan.

But, they taste delicious and can't wait to taste one tomorrow after the caramel soaks in. Yum!

Cooking Parsnip Bacon

I enjoy experimenting in the kitchen during my "free" time and today was no exception. Today's experiment was inspired by the Nov. 2010 issue of Food & Wine magazine and a very small article about parsnip bacon. Chef Quinn Hatfield of Hatfield's in Los Angeles shared the simple recipe:

Chef Quinn Hatfield's Parsnip Bacon
Use a vegetable peeler to thinly slice parsnips;
Brush both sides with vegetable oil;
Place on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper;
Sprinkle with smoked salt;
Top with another piece of parchment paper;
Place another cookie sheet atop the parchment paper;
Bake one hour and 15 minutes at 300 degrees;
Cool before serving.

Seemed simple enough to prepare and following is my version of the recipe.

Jenn's Parsnip Bacon
I used my vegetable peeler to slice off thin layers of one parsnip;
I dipped the slices in olive oil;
Placed on a parchment paper-lined cookie sheet;
Sprinkled with flaked sea salt and pepper (didn't see smoked salt at Publix);
Placed another piece of parchment paper atop the slices followed by a cookie sheet;
Baked at 300 degrees for about an hour and 5 minutes.

If you look at the picture on Food & Wine and compare it to my final results (below) you'll see mine look like crisp bacon.

These actually turned out pretty tasty with the right amount of crispness and bite peppery bite.

Grandma's Delish Corn Chowder Recipe

Homemade corn chowder is one of the most delicious foods and tasting it always reminds me of home. I love the milky and salty base along with the texture of pork and corn. My mom makes and grandma made the best corn chowder and when a friend brought me back fresh corn from Wisconsin I knew there was only one thing to do with it: make corn chowder.

First, the Wisconsin corn. Yum-ola! I realize Florida is heavy into agriculture but there’s something about vegetables grown in fertile soil of the North. The corn was incredibly sweet and crisp – absolutely delicious.

Grandma's Delish Corn Chowder Recipe

Second, the recipe. I asked my mom for it and she sent me grandma’s version. Here it is:

Salt Pork (you can use bacon if you would rather)
Onion
Evaporated milk
Potato
Corn
Milk or half and half or cream.

Notice anything missing? Quantities perhaps?

So grandma’s cooking instructions are as follows:

Cut salt pork into small pieces - fry till almost crisp and be careful not to burn.
Add diced onion toward the end and cook ‘til translucent.
Drain some of the grease off if there is a lot. [Note from Mom: I think Grandma liked to keep it all in!]
Add a can of evaporated milk, corn, and potatoes which have been diced and cooked ahead of time.
Corn can be canned, frozen or fresh cooked and cut off the cob.
Heat and add milk. Do NOT boil since the milk will curdle.
Add salt and pepper to taste.

You can add other ingredients if you want such as parsley, grated cheddar, etc. on occasion. You may want to try some other spices, too.

My Corn Chowder Recipe

Hmm. Being one who enjoys cooking but not proficient at it, I did my best to replicate the recipe and importantly, the taste. This is how I made it:

Pound of Peppercorn Bacon (I shopped at Walmart and they didn’t have salt pork)
Medium Onion – Diced
One Can of Evaporated Milk [Note: My Mom told me I should have added two cans because of the amount of milk I used; but it still tastes fantastic with one can and plus, I don’t know what the purpose of evaporated milk is]
Five Medium Red Potatoes – Boiled with Skins then Diced
Four Ears of Fresh Wisconsin Corn
Half Gallon of 2% Milk
One Quart of Half and Half

I chopped the bacon into small bits and fried it. Because of the quantity I friend half a pound at a time. When it was about done, add half of the diced onion and cook until the onion is translucent.
Pour the bacon, onion and three quarters of the grease into the pot.
Add the evaporated milk, corn and potatoes.
Heat over medium heat and stir.
Once mixture is warm add the milk and Half and Half on low to medium heat until cooked.

Do not boil – it’ll curdle and make you sad you can’t enjoy the incredible chowder.

I didn’t add any salt or pepper because the bacon had enough of both.

I froze much of the chowder and it freezes very well. When ready to eat I completely thawed it in the refrigerator before heating in the microwave in 45 second intervals.

What's Been Cookin'? Mint Ice Cream Sundaes

Yeah, I've been a bit neglectful of this blog - so sorry. But, I have been making somewhat regular posts over at SoloTravelGirl.com.

Okay, since that's out of the way, onto to tastier things, what I've been cooking in the kitchen. This past weekend it was mint M&M ice cream sundaes. I had last Friday off and was flipping around the TV when I saw "Down Home with the Neelys"and they were cooking up some good eats. Their recipe for mint chocolate chip ice cream had me at "mint chocolate chip ice cream" so I decided to make a batch. Here's a link to their recipe for mint chocolate chip ice cream and here's how I tweaked it:

One 14oz can sweetened condensed milk , chilled
2 cups heavy whipping cream, chilled
1 1/2 teaspoons peppermint extract
1/8 teaspoon green food coloring
1 cup mini M&Ms candies (I had a BOGO coupon for M&Ms, used one bag for my office trail mix snack and don’t think it was a good substitute to mini chocolate morsels)

Directions

Mix the milk, cream, peppermint extract and green food coloring together in a large bowl and refrigerate until cold;
Pour cream mixture into ice cream machine and turn it on;
Churn until the mixture looks slushy like soft serve, about 12 to 15 minutes;
Stir in the mini M&Ms candies (In theory, you wait this long to pour in the chips otherwise they will sink to the bottom because they are heavier than the mixture. The M&Ms sunk even after the mixture was slushy.);
Transfer the ice cream to another container and put plastic wrap on top of the ice cream;
Cover the container tightly with a lid;
Freeze for several hours until firm enough to scoop.

I served it atop fresh baked brownies, hot fudge (dropped hot fudge underneath the brownies) and whipped cream. Although the ice cream froze overnight it was still soft and melted rapidly, but maybe the hot fudge had something to do with it. I also discovered M&Ms may not melt in your hand but they will bleed in an ice cream mixture which caused the green ice cream to turn an olive green. The ice cream was very minty and if I make it again I'll reduce the amount of mint. Overall, it was delish!

Meeting the American Dream - Dusty Rhodes in Punta Gorda, Fla.

Here's a secret: I grew up watching professional wrestling. Yup, there, I said it. So when I heard the American Dream, Dusty Rhodes, was rolling into Punta Gorda last week, I had to go.

The Charlotte Harbor Event & Conference Center seems to be the ideal venue for professional wrestling, this is the second time I've attended a Florida Championship Wrestling match at the fairly new venue (grand opening was January 2009; first match I attended was in Dec. 2009 where Ricky 'The Dragon' Steamboat made an appearance) and others have been held there, too.

The night card for Friday night (July 30) included eight events. Can't call them all matches because when the FCW Divas came out, they held a limbo competition. At first, thought it was pretty lame but it was actually pretty clever planning on the organizer's part - it was a way to have the Divas perform without wrestling, for whatever reason.

The night included some tag team matches and one-on-one events. Was disappointed there wasn't a battle royal at the end but the evening was exciting enough. I can tell you who won but I'd spoil the fun for those not in attendance and waiting to view it on Bright House Network on Sunday night at 6 p.m.

And for those who don't know, FCW is considered the minor league for World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). When Dusty Rhodes came out after the first (or second) match with FCW Diva Aksana on his arm, he received a standing ovation. In some ways, it seemed as though it was a changing of the guards. Rhodes told the audience many of the performers wrestling that night will someday join the WWE circuit.

KIX Country 92.9 had a guest announcer at the match for one match and I swear they announced him as Trooper Roy but I can't find anyone on the station D.J. with this name. But who knows, maybe he's not a D.J. Would make sense to have Bob Alexander announce a match, since he has been inducted into the Florida Boxing Hall of Fame. But who knows, maybe he WAS the guest announcer and I heard and wrote the wrong name down. Anyway...

So, I stood in line almost 90 minutes to meet Dusty Rhodes, shake his hand and have him autograph a postcard. Nice guy. Fun evening. More images can be found on my Flickr account.

Crowd Control Keeps Stalkers (Like Me) Behind the Red Carpet

Don't be silly, I'm not a true stalker, just a gal with a camera seeking bragging rights and April's 2010 Sarasota Film Festival was easy for me to play paparazzi behind velvet rope of the star-studded red carpet. My friends with Camelback Displays have asked me to share information about crowd control products in exchange for supporting my traveling habit. My experience of snapping photos of stars Kevin Kline, Vincent D'Onofrio (and found out whether he prefers boxers or briefs) and rocker Patti Smith is perfect. In order to grab those photos, I needed to disregard the barriers a tiny bit.

So how did I do it? Not by aggression but patience.

Opening night with Kevin Kline was thick with security (aka: burly security men) who insisted I stay behind the barricades. Every so often I drifted past and was flashed the hairy eyeball but once celebs began walking the red carpet, security's attention was turned away allowing me to move around somewhat behind the velvet rope. I actually set foot on the red carpet – yikes! Luckily, no one saw (and no one cared) and I grabbed a few quick shots of Kline.

The closing dinner function was much easier to grab photos because there was limited security and minimal fans. I could've danced on the red carpet and no one would’ve cared. Using a little patience, I hovered outside the Sarasota Opera House about an hour to snap photos of the special guests with my favorite celeb being Ben Foster.

It's amazing how stanchions, whether industrial or glitzy (i.e.: velvet), keep order so simply whether for a sporting event, festival, and even for traffic control. They don't need to be overbearing barricades or ugly to do their job, I'm thankful they make my hobby easy!

My cats play rough and any critter which meets their paws probably won't come out alive. That's where I come in. I try to save the poor souls and pictured is the thanks I got!

Friday morning was the usual routine. Once the cats are fed, I open the door to the patio where the cats watch the world and dream of being feral kitties romping in the grass.

I knew something was up when I heard excessive meowing and Sunny was intensely occupied in the living room. Looking, I saw a dark brown lizard in his grips, or so I thought.

I pushed Sunny away but the lizard moved with him. Picking up the cat, I slightly shook him side to side, thinking perhaps a claw had pierced the little victim.

Nope. Another look and this little Florida lizard had his jaws gripping the cat's paw!

It eventually let go and made a poor attempt at hiding. Okay, it's in unfamiliar territory, I get it.

Ugh. Just what I didn't need, another dried up lizard carcass because it couldn't figure out how to make the run for freedom. (I found one last week in one of my computer bags. Once removed, Sunny took it upon himself to make the bag his favorite sleeping spot.)

I grabbed the bugger and he swung around and latched onto my thumb! It didn't hurt but startled me. This was the first time a lizard fought back. It felt like hundreds of Velcro teeth latched onto my thumb.

The situation was so funny, had to capture this Kodak moment and although this iPhone photo isn't the best, you get the idea.

Sometimes It's About Throwing Spaghetti on the Wall

Honestly, I have no clue where June went, or the first half of 2010 for that matter. But that's not the purpose of this post.

I've been trying to spend more time on my blog and writing gigs to pay down debt and continue making a name for myself and sadly, I've been neglecting this blog. I've done some pretty cool things in the past month: groovy trips, cooked some tasty food and overall, just enjoying life.

I have to chuckle today because there are some things I write about because I'm passionate about it while there are other things I write about because I know I can make a quick buck. Last week my article "Five Things Frequent Travelers Almost Never Have to Buy" was published. In a week's time, it's received more than 4,000 page views! Meanwhile, other articles I put my heart, soul and time into are barely pushing double digits.

The article's published on Associated Content which was recently purchased by Yahoo! Did the big Y publish it on their site? Is it just a highly searched topic? My Google alerts haven't picked up anything, of course, if it's elsewhere, doesn't mean my name still needs to be associated with it.

Sometimes, I'm just throwing spaghetti on the wall to see what sticks and that article is popular for some reason. Will be fun to see how much this silly little article makes me.

I'm not really an auto gal but I do love my gadgets such as my car DVD player, navigational system, and satellite radio. Yes, although I have XM, I still use my DVD player and although I use OnStar's Turn-by-Turn Directions, I always carry my Garmin. (In case I'm driving in someone else's car or am too embarrassed to call OnStar and admit how navigationally challenged I am.) So where does one go to find information on what car accessories to purchase? This is where my friends with ShopWiki come in. The site is a resource for all sorts of great things including car audio and video accessories.

The site has a GPS buying guide to compare most major navigational units such as a Garmin NUVI 660 to a TomTom ONE XL Portable GPS. Users can also find the best in-dash receiver compatible with their iPod or MP3 player and use the side panel to find information on top manufacturers. Guides offer tips on what to look for when purchasing car gadgets, an example is the page on how to buy car speakers.

Once the research is done, the site makes it easy to purchase car audio and video accessories by providing links to the online stores selling these items. With this Web resource, there's no need to be navigationally challenged again.

Homemade Blueberry Cheesecake Ice Cream – Yum!

Earlier this month I picked blueberries in Fort Ogden, about 20 minutes from my Port Charlotte, Fla., apartment. I ended up gathering 2.5 pounds of the sweet berries of goodness but what to do with them? I usually make blueberry jam and I still may do so but thanks to the power of the Internet, I found a wonderful recipe for blueberry cheesecake ice cream!

A friend gave me her ice cream maker and although I have no business eating ice cream, if I make it, it should be "healthier" for me, right?

I found a Cooking Light recipe on MyRecipes.com and reduced it to fit the countertop ice cream maker. Unfortunately, I didn't research how a Krups ice cream maker works and the drum needs to be frozen for days, much longer than the 20 hours I had it in. Needless to say, the ice cream mixture didn't freeze in the maker but in the freezer.
Still, it was delish! And no, I didn't eat it all myself, I shared. Here's my modified recipe. (Again, here's a link to the original recipe.) Enjoy!

Blueberry Cheesecake Ice Cream Recipe – One Quart
1 Cup Sugar
4 Ounces Cream Cheese
2 Egg Yolks
1 ½ Cup 2% Milk
½ Cup Half-and-Half
2 Cups Blueberries
2 Tablespoons Powdered Sugar
2 Tablespoons of Water

Combine sugar, cream cheese and egg yolks in a bowl and beat with a mixer on high until smooth.

Combine milk and half-and-half in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Remove from heat.
Add half of the hot milk mixture to cheese mixture stirring with a whisk 'til creamy.
Return it all to the milk mixture on the stove, cover and cook over medium-low heat 5 minutes (or 'til thermometer registers 160 degrees) and stir constantly.
Place pan in an ice-water bath.
Cool completely and stir occasionally (It'll cool pretty quick).

Combine blueberries, powdered sugar, and 1/4 cup water in a small saucepan and bring to boil.
Reduce heat, and simmer for 10 minutes or until mixture thickens slightly, stirring frequently. (Mine took much longer than 10 minutes).
Remove from heat, and cool completely. (I used a the ice-water bath.)

Stir blueberry mixture into milk mixture.
Pour mixture into the freezer can of an ice-cream freezer; freeze according to manufacturer's instructions.
Spoon ice cream into a freezer-safe container, cover and freeze for 1 hour or until firm...if you can wait that long. You have my permission to eat out of the ice cream drum.

Chick-fil-A's New Spicy Chicken Sandwich Sizzles with Heat

Last week, thousands of Chick-fil-A fans had a VIP tasting of the fast food restaurant's New Spicy Chicken Sandwich for free! It was pretty slick how Chick-fil-A requested advance reservations for a specific time period at a specific restaurant.

Upon arrival, my order was taken at a designated VIP line. I turned in my invitation (which was emailed after I secured my reservation online) and my name was checked off the list. As a bonus, fries and a beverage were included along with the New Spicy Chicken Sandwich. Sweet! Free dinner for the single gal.

The dining area had a red carpet, tables draped with red coverings, fresh flowers and table tents indicating "VIP Seating."

I ordered my new sandwich with the pepper jack cheese, lettuce and tomato.

The verdict? Oh, it's delish and hot with spelled with capital H-O-T! It's a thick, juicy piece of chicken full of zesty heat. I'm a fan of spicy hot food but think this may be too much heat for the faint at heart.

'Quirky Girl' the Song to be Released June 15, 2010, by Lady & the BASS

Had no idea in 2005 when I started this "Quirky-Kitsch Girl" blog I was at the beginning of the "Quirky Girl Movement." Apparently, "Quirky Girls" are women who aren't actively seeking Prince Charming (although it'd be nice if he knocked on the door or if Mr. Right Now turned up), at ease being alone (which is why I say 'I'm traveling alone, not lonely'), achieving new goals, and fearless.

Apparently, I'm the definition of a "Quirky Girl" and an Italy-based musical group, Lady & the BASS, has composed a song to accompany the "Quirky Girl Movement."

Have I just been validated? Or a fad of pop culture? The song "Quirky Girl" is being released June 15 by Groove N Moove Records and will be available through various digital music stores, such as iTunes, Amazon MP3 and Napster. Give a listen here, it's quite groovy.

What Have I Baked Lately? Peanut Butter Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies. Mmm...

Last weekend I baked brownies and a golf ball shaped cake. Since it just looked like half a ball (I baked it in a bowl), I didn't take a photo to share. It tasted pretty good - red velvet with one-and-a-half containers of Betty Crocker's cream cheese frosting - yum! It was my turn to make a co-worker's cake. Anywho...

This weekend I baked Peanut Butter Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies and I have to say, OMG! These cookies were delish! I found the recipe on the blog Baking Bites which I found via The Motherload blog.

Actually, the original recipe is for Peanut Butter Oatmeal and I added the package of chocolate chips. The recipe also called for a peanut butter glaze but since I don't keep milk anymore (stupid lactose!), I skipped it and they tasted just as good.

Celebrity Sighting: 'Pawn Stars' in Port Charlotte, Fla.

I've never been in a pawn shop before, now I have one more thing to tick off the bucket list. I spent a bit of my evening at Westchester Gold and Diamonds in Port Charlotte. No, I haven't fallen on financial hardship, I was meeting a couple of reality television celebrities from History Channel's Pawn Stars. Austin "Chumlee" Russell (pictured) and Rick "The Spotter" Harrison were on hand tonight and will be there Saturday. I confess I didn't know who they were but I'm always up for some celebrity spotting. The best part was meeting the show's publicist. She looked familiar and it clicked (after she told me), she appeared on an episode of "How Do I Look?", the one when the Chippendales requested the make over. I peppered her with questions but a burning one I always wondered was, "Do they really make you throw away all of your clothes?"

"Yes."

But she said the quality was much better. She also has ties to Charlotte County. Great chatting with her and an overall cool evening.

Celebrity Sighting: Ahmed Hassan of DIY Network's Yard Crashers

Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival wrapped up Sunday and since I was in Orlando visiting friends, I swung by to check it out (I'm a season pass holder). In addition to incredible topiaries and gorgeous floral displays, weekends during the festival included educational workshops including those with celebrity gardeners.

I wasn't able to arrive as early as I would have liked but I did catch a glimpse of the host of DIY Network's Yard Crashers, Ahmed Hassan. He seemed to have great rapport with fans and took his time chatting and laughing with them. Seemed like a really nice guy.

The other highlight of the day was enjoying a Disney turkey leg for lunch. Yum! This has got to be the best theme park comfort food. Unfortunately, they're too darn big and I can never finish one. Next time I visit (which will be next month during a Hollywood Studio's Star Wars Weekend (the one with Billy Dee Williams!) I'll be bringing a baggie to save it. Is that gross?

Adventures in Making Beef Jerky

Now I understand why beef jerky is so expensive. It takes a lotta meat, sometimes complicated ingredients and patience. The June issue of Food & Wine magazine included an article about 28-year-old New York City baker Rachel Graville (and proprietor of Iris Cafe in Brooklyn) and the beef jerky she's been making for the past couple of years.

I'm a fan of the dried meat and following the article were three beef jerky recipes so I decided to tackle the "Sweet & Spicy Jerky" recipe, which wasn't the simplest recipe, but sat in the middle in complexity of ingredients.

You can follow this link to the Food & Wine website for the recipe. Shopping at Wal-Mart, I found most of the ingredients except whole anise (I purchased anise seeds and used 1/2 teaspoon) and fish sauce.

Yes, the fish sauce for beef jerky sounds disgusting and I substituted oyster sauce. Okay, probably not the best choice because after reading cooking boards, oyster sauce is thicker and sweeter than fish sauce.

Slicing the meat was pretty easy and ended up marinating the meat about an hour more than recommended (recipe called for no more than 8 hours. Since I made this during the week, it soaked for 9). Baking at 200 degrees Fahrenheit for four hours was about an hour short but I'm pleased with the end product, although when I travel to New York next month, I'm planning a visit to Iris Cafe to pick up Graville's real stuff.

Cooking Up My Fresh Seattle Fish

If you've been keeping up with my travels over on Solo Travel Girl blog, you know I visited the Pacific Northwest last month for my 40th birthday celebration and made a trip to Pike Place Fish Market in Seattle. If you haven't seen the video of the experience, check it out on YouTube.

I shipped back $XX amount of fish (I'm purposely refraining from revealing the amount because although it was a deal, some may find the price a bit exorbitant) from the trip and have enjoyed fresh seafood just about everyday I've been back.

I purchased wild salmon and halibut. Salmon's now in season and all I can say is OMG! It is so tender it practically melts in my mouth. And the halibut is pretty delish, too.

How have I prepared these fish dishes? Up top is a snapshot of halibut with a caper butter sauce with tomatoes, inspired by watching Food Network and seeing the chef for the governor prepare her halibut in a similar sauce.

Here's my recipe for caper butter sauce (and next time I'll dice the tomatoes):

In a skillet, melt a tablespoon of butter, brown both sides of the halibut then transfer to pan and bake in oven at 350 degrees until done (15 minutes maybe?);
In the same pan on medium heat, add 3 tablespoons of butter (this may be excessive, but good) and melt;
Add a tablespoon of capers;
Add chopped tomato to the mixture and stir so melted butter does not melt;
Garnish halibut with the sauce and enjoy!

That's Oregon wild rice accompanying the dish, purchased during the Portland Farmers Market.

For the salmon, I combined some of my favorite things to make a sweet and spicy berry sauce (pictured above).

First, I grilled the salmon on my George Foreman Grill.
While grilling, combine 2 tablespoons of maple syrup (I used the real stuff from Western New York); 2 tablespoons of raspberry jam; 2 tablespoons of green onions and 1 teaspoon of hot pepper flakes in a saucepan and cooked over medium heat until well blended together;
When the salmon is finished grilling, transfer to a plate and top with the sweet and spicy berry sauce.

Yum! I love the combined flavor of sweet, spicy and savory.

I have a many more fillets and steaks to enjoy and will have fun experimenting with recipes.

Where I've Been, Where I'm Going: Film Festival and Birthday Trip

Time, oh give me time...

Geesh! Had no idea how fast time passes during this whole aging process thing. My birthday trip is AROUND the corner, check out the deets over on my SoloTravelGirl.com blog.

Last weekend I spent most of it in Sarasota stalking the 2010 Sarasota Film Festival celebrities. Not really. I'm not a stalker and I'm not a very good paparazzi but check out my Flickr stream for snapshots from Saturday's red carpet.

See the photo of rocker Patti Smith? She's an uber celebrity and here's what happened when she arrived at the Saturday night Sarasota Film Festival event: actor Stanley Tucci's car pulled up behind her and guess he was a bit impatient. Rather than waiting for her car to advance so he could walk the red carpet, he and his entourage got out where the car was parked. No biggie, right?

Well the six guys, two photographers and handful of fans ran over to him leaving just me snapping photos of Ms. Smith. I felt a little bad I mean, she's a mega-accomplished star and deserves respect. So, taking it upon myself to make her feel loved, I welcomed her to Sarasota, she replied with a smile and "thank you". Classy lady! She's pictured above.

Stalking at the 2010 Sarasota Film Festival, April 9

12th Annual Sarasota Film Festival Kicked off tonight. No live Tweeting for me this year, as explained in this post on my Solo Travel Girl blog and I can't afford to attend all the events so... the plan was to stalk the red carpet tonight - opening night.

And the on-camera star power on the red carpet? Kevin Kline. There could have been more celebs, I just didn't know who they were. I don't know if other celebs showed up for the post-film parties but hope to take in some stargazing next weekend.

I realize a film festival is suppose to be about substance, about filmmakers selling movies and maybe that's what the Sarasota Film Festival is doing - focusing on the business aspect.

Take Me Out to the Ballpark...Again

Today was my third Tampa Bay Rays Spring Training game this week. I'm not a big baseball fan, just worked out that way. Although, have to admit I'm enjoying the Spring Training energy.

Tuesday night was Rays vs. Boston Red Sox. I purchased the tickets the day they went on sale because:

1. I wanted to go to a game this season.
2. Figured if I couldn't go or find someone to go with me, I could sell the tickets because it would be a sell out game.

Wednesday I sat in the County's box along with a magazine travel editor so that was for business. Which was the day Sean Rodriguez made an amazing catch in the outfield.

Today I went because my vet gave me two tickets yesterday. I've dropped a lot of money in that office so took them. Ended up going alone (it's March Madness) which allowed me to try out my Nikon 5000 some more. Check out some of the results over on Flickr.

AVATAR Coming to DVD and Blu-ray April 22, the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day

Okay, I'm lame. I'm probably one of 99 Americans who hasn't seen James Cameron’s history-making movie, AVATAR yet. It's the highest grossing film of all time, raking in over $2.6 billion in worldwide box office receipts. Apparently if I want to have the total 3-D experience, I better hurry because I received word this week the movie will be available in the U.S. and Canada on DVD and Blu-ray April 22. Already??? Where has time gone?

Honestly, I have no interest in seeing AVATAR but EVERYONE is telling me it’s fabulous and a must-see, although, I’m told conservatives may not appreciate the underlying political messages. Are there really hidden political messages? I thought it's about a bunch of blue people running through the jungle and flying over cliffs and canyons. I also heard some news show discussing the euphoric impact the movie has on people but some people experience depression after watching AVATAR because of the let down. The talking heads said the movie paints a Utopian society which is probably an escape for viewers but once they are back to reality, they are saddened reality isn’t like AVATAR-land. Can anyone enlighten me?

April 22 is the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. I imagine because of the movie’s theme, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment purposely coordinated the release date. So when seeking that perfect gift to give your favorite tree hugger, pick them up a copy of AVATAR and you probably should pick one up for you. After all, it’s epic.

I Tried to Be Discreet, Baby!

Perhaps I was a bit too discreet in trying to snap a shot of Dickie V (Dick Vitale), famed basketball sportscaster when my parents and I enjoyed lunch at the Broken Egg, Lakewood Ranch (Bradenton/Sarasota, Fla.). That's my Dad's shoulder in the foreground with the announcer in the background.

Vitale was there raising funds for a pediatric research grant for local hospitals. He was selling and signing books, basketballs and even Dickie V bobbleheads. Now, that's a lotta bobbleheads to raise $1 million and think he realizes that because May 21, 2010 will be the Fifth Annual Dick Vitale Gala. Being held at The Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota, the event will honor Tony Dungy and Tom Izzo.

What's an ABC's Extreme Makeover House Look Like in Person?

Smaller. At least that's what I thought when seeing the Extreme Makeover home in Buffalo's West Side (228 Massachusetts Ave.) this past January. It's a lovely house and the shots from ABC's show made the interior look huge but suppose it's true, the camera dds about 10 (or 20?) pounds, even to a house.

Catching the Fever: Tampa Bay Rays Spring Training Practices

I know nothing about baseball. Okay, let's say I know very little about baseball. I know it involves two teams who hit a ball with a bat and run around some bases (four, including home plate) on a field called a diamond. And that's about it. I can't even use the excuse of being a girl because I know many women who know everything about the sport. I will use the "daughter of a football coach card" though.

Living in Florida, knowing something about baseball, or at least pretending to know something, seems to be a requirement, especially since the Sunshine State is home to the Grapefruit League (spring training). I'm living in the spring training home of the Tampa Bay Rays (Port Charlotte) and trying to catch baseball fever. This morning I headed out to the Charlotte Sports Park to practice with my new toy (Nikon D5000) and figure out the excitement.

I'm guessing spring training practice (it's free! And begins around 9:30 each morning until March 4 when games begin) is much different than a regular season game. Fans seemed to be on a mission of capturing as many autographs as possible. Autograph collecting just isn't whipping out a business card and having the player sign the back of it. It's definitely much more complex.

Tampa Bay Rays fans came out prepared with bags of balls, extra ballpoint pens and Sharpies, baseball cards, bats, and photographs. I saw one guy with baseball cards attached to a notebook so all he has to do is hand the pad to the ball player. Another guy had a clipboard, also making it easy for the ball player to sign a photo or card. Those who were really prepared brought their own water to keep hydrated from the heat.

Sweet spot? What's that? All I know is I heard lots of giddy fans excited when so-and-so signed their ball on the sweet spot so it has to be important.

Yup, I have a lot to learn about baseball but I'll pick it up. Eventually. Or, anyone up for teaching me? Enjoy some of these snapshots taken today. When I figure out who the players are, I'll label the images appropriately. I followed the crowds and snapped photos of those the fans were excited about.

Bidding Florida Skaters Good Luck in 2010 Winter Olympics

Despite all I had to do (or at least what I should have done) this weekend, I joined in the celebration to bid good luck to 2010 Winter Olympic-bound U.S. pairs figure skaters Caydee Denney and Jeremy Barrett (pictured: doesn't Caydee look like America's next sweetheart? And I'd much rather sport a Caydee Denney hairstyle than a Dorothy Hamill wedge although my hair probably can't do either) and Amanda Evora and Mark Ladwig yesterday at the Ellenton Ice and Sports Complex in Ellenton, Fla.

Yes, Florida is producing figure skaters for the Winter Games in Vancouver which in part is due to the coaching team of Jim Peterson, Lyndon Johnston and Alison Smith and to the excellent training facilities in Ellenton.

Amazingly, I've uploaded some photos on Flickr and someday I'll post at least one video (although it's evident I need better cameras!!!) but enjoy this recap in my article titled, "Florida Skaters Heading to 2010 Winter Olympics: Pairs Skaters Denney & Barrett and Evora & Ladwig Represent Team USA." Be sure to check out which skaters are dating!

The above photo are skaters for the silent auction which were autographed by the Olympians. Proceeds of the silent auction and raffle benefit the skaters' families so they can make the trip to Vancouver and the Southwest Florida Figure Skating Club.

Yes, Dad. You Made the Blog

"Am I going to make the blog?" my father asked yesterday.

Does my family feel left out when they're not included in my blog posts? Or do they cringe with anticipation as to what family secrets I'll expose? [Note: as far as I know, there aren't *many* family secrets.]

My dad was admitted into the hospital on Monday for your typical "not feeling well situation" which lead to the doctor keeping him overnight due to family history and his age. Tests followed.

When I spoke with him yesterday he was *just* going to have a stent implanted. (Is "implanted" the right terminology?) No worries. Just about everyone has one these days, including his big brother, and it's a pretty routine medical procedure.

This afternoon, the stent procedure turned into single bypass surgery. Guess he's trying to do one better than his big brother and rather than a stent, will come out with a badge of honor of a new scar on his chest.

When I spoke to my sister this evening she said all went well. I'm feeling somewhat out of the loop being down here in Florida and the rest of the family in New York. Feeling somewhat helpless. My Mom sent updates via her iPhone - thank you 21st century technology.

I feel I have an obligation to post SOMETHING on here about his hospital visit so this is it.

Really wish I posted this before the holidays but better late than never. I was introduced to Bisque It Studio in North Port - a ceramic painting studio -last fall and truly enjoyed it. This year for Christmas I ended up painting ornaments and made this Twitter-themed one for me.

While not perfect, it's a snapshot of my Twitter obsession. The bird's eye is a Swarovski Crystal.

Oh, and don't think I painted the balls in the vase, too. Picked those up at Michael's.

Holidays are over but it doesn’t mean gift buying is done for the year. Au contraire because birthdays are sprinkled throughout the year along with “real” and Hallmark holidays, like Administrative Assistant’s Day. It’s no secret that one of the favorite things I like to give are gift cards. Some people think this is a bit impersonal but they're the perfect size, thoughtful, and consumable.

My new friends over at SHOP.com have asked me to check out their selection of gift cards and once I found them, it’s a decent selection. I say "once I found them" because the home page has a lot of information and interestingly, DollySHOP is pretty prominent on the page. Hmm, Dolly Parton's selling merchandise. Anyway, back to gift cards…

I used the search function for "gift card" and found a nice selection with my favorite at the top from AMC Cinemas (night out at the movies is a GREAT gift and I’ve given it as a gift multiple times for family and friends) and Regal Cinemas was further down list. Also in this query were gift cards from Amazon, QVC and iTunes. Others included cards from brick and mortar retailers as Bass Pro Shops, Old Navy and The Gap. (My middle sister always gets a gift card from The Gap from me.)

Now if I wasn't savvy enough to use the search function, how would I know gift cards are available on the site? Well, upon closer look I saw a link to "gift cards" under "Gifts" on the left-hand column which led to a landing page with ideas for her, him, teen girls, teen boys, girls, and boys. The list of cards didn't seem as impressive as a general search of Shop.com. Plus, some of the listed retailers didn’t have hot hyperlinks and have no idea how I could have ordered them. For instance, the site states Kohl's cards are available but how do I purchase one?

Then there were gift cards I would never purchase. Like Sur La Table? What the heck's that? The product description didn't explain, is it a generic restaurant card? Scrolling down the bottom of the page was a hyperlink to Sur La Table – turns out it’s site to purchase cookware, register for cooking classes, book culinary travel, etc. OK, now that I know what it is, I’d definitely buy this or would like to receive it but if I hadn’t done the research, wouldn’t even consider it.

So yup, gift cards make a pretty groovy gift don't ya think?

Christmas Eve Dinner 2009

Christmas Eve I enjoyed a Florida-style feast. It was a chance to enjoy the single set of dishes received when I got married. (Was that a sign? Only receiving one set of China?) My dinner consisted of steak, lobster tail, and stone crab claws. Yum!

Dessert - took the organic strawberries from last week's Worden Farm crop share and dipped them in chocolate. Tried to make tuxedo strawberries but think I melted the semi-sweet chocolate too long because it came out lumpy and not very pretty - although tasted mighty good.

I'm now thinking of the next special occasion when I can have stone crab claws. But do I really need a special occasion?

Easy Christmas Sweets

Not sure about anyone else but the holidays ignite a need to make sweets. Luckily I have neighbors and friends to share (and experiment with) so I'm not eating them all by myself. In addition to Nigella Lawson's Rocky Road Bars I baked chocolate chip cookies and peanut butter blossoms, made sugar and spice nuts (as found via Amy Clark's Motherload Blog), peppermint bark and salty almond bark (both pictured).

Following are recipes for peppermint bark and salty almond bark. My note: I modified these from other recipes I found to make them more budget friendly. The recipes I found called for either baker's chocolate or high-end, quality chocolate. My taste buds (and pocketbook) don't mind Hershey's or Nestle's chocolate.

Peppermint Bark
This is my FAVORITE Christmas treat. Chocolate. Mint. Mmm. Mmm.

1, 12 ounce package semi-sweet chocolate chips
1, 12 ounce package white chocolate chips
3/4 cup crushed candy canes
2 tsp vegetable oil
3/4 tsp peppermint extract

Crush peppermint candy canes, equal to 3/4 cup. I put them in a sealed freezer bag and whacked away with the hammer (hence the hammer in the photo). Set aside.
Line cookie sheet with aluminum foil.
Melt semi-sweet chocolate chips with 1 tsp vegetable oil and pour onto aluminum foil, smooth out with spatula to about 1/4 inch thick.
Place in refrigerator for about an hour.
Melt white chocolate chips with 1 tsp vegetable oil.
Once melted, add 3/4 tsp peppermint extract and crushed peppermint candy canes, mix well.
Spread white chocolate mixture atop semi-sweet chocolate and refrigerate.
Once solid, break into pieces and enjoy!

Salty Almond Bark
Sweet. Salty. Nutty. All in one delish bite. Can you ask for anything more?

1, 12 ounce package semi-sweet chocolate chips
1, 12 ounce package white chocolate chips
1 cup roughly chopped almonds
1 Tbsp Kosher salt

Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
Coarsely chop almonds in baking pan until lightly toasted, about 10 to 12 minutes.
Remove toasted almonds from oven, place in bowl and set aside.
Reduce oven heat to 200 degrees Fahrenheit.
Line baking pan with aluminum foil and sprinkle rows of chocolate, alternating between white and semi-sweet rows (or just toss them on the pan anyway you like).
Place chocolate in oven for about 5 to 7 minutes.
Remove when chips are soft and use spatula to smooth out chocolate somewhat evenly and thinly, about 1/4 inch.
Sprinkle chopped almonds and salt evenly over the chocolate.
Using spatula, lightly press almonds and salt into chocolate.
Refrigerate until solid.
Break into pieces and enjoy!

Solo for Christmas 2009

I've baked, mailed Christmas cards (Old School) and shipped out packages. Long story short, looks like I'll be spending Christmas solo. I opted not to fly home to Buffalo because of insanely overpriced airfare and wasn't sure I could take extended time off on the front end - since parents then visit my brother after. I'm not anti-family, I have plans to fly up in January.

I've received an invite from a co-worker (much appreciated) but Christmas is really about family time. Haven't heard from Florida relatives so debating between utilizing my Disney annual pass or just staying home catching up on writing and getting organized for 2010.

Not sure if I'll be posting before Christmas but enjoy this story about "The Worst Christmas Gift I Ever Received," which I wrote in 2007.

I Met Ricky 'The Dragon' Steamboat

Friday night was spent at the Charlotte Harbor Event & Conference Center watching a Florida Championship Wrestling performance (?) called Christmas Chaos. The event included eight matches and a pre-event meet and greet with Ricky 'The Dragon' Steamboat - I remember him when growing up, Jillian Beyor - 2008 Playboy Model of the Year and newly signed Diva for the WWE (pictured above), and Justin Angel - Current FCW Heavyweight Champion. (What a cutie! He's pictured below.)

I have lots of thoughts to share about the evening - considering I went alone - and will share my 10 observations another time.

10 People Who Haven't Slept with Tiger Woods?

Women claiming to have had relations with Tiger Woods seem to be crawling out of the woodwork. I've read there are between four and 10 alleged mistresses and have to wonder how many of these women are just trying to gain their 15 minutes of fame. I mean, do they realize they are admitting to having an affair with a knowingly married man with kids?

And how many of these women really had physical relations with the golfer beyond a handshake?

I love the stunt Tampa Bay's MJ Morning Show (radio, WFLZ) pulled off last month. They sent one of their personalities to stand outside Tiger's neighborhood donning a bikini and holding a sign reading, ‘Tiger – They Offered Me $500,000 – I’m Keeping My Mouth Shut!’ She also shouted, "He's not a Tiger, he's a cheetah." Considering I listen to the show daily, I got a good chuckle out of the radio stunt. Good stuff. Have to wonder how many people thought she was a legit mistress.

A caller to Rush Limbaugh's program this afternoon raised an interesting point. None of these women coming forward or being revealed are African American. Does this mean Tiger Woods didn't or isn't having affairs with African American women? Or maybe it's just if he was/is, perhaps they're keeping their mouths shut.

So I have to wonder, when will the list of '10 People Who Haven't Slept with Tiger Woods' start surfacing? Better yet, if you had to create a list, who would you place on it? Queen of England? Adam Lambert? An Orlando Perkins waitress? Oops, she's on the "did" list. So who would make the 10 list of have nots?

Enquiring minds want to know...

OMG! Nigella Lawson's Rocky Road Bars are Sinfully Delish!

When SELF Magazine arrives I read it cover to cover and Nigella Lawson's Christmas Rocky Road recipe caught my eye this month. While it isn't quite Christmas yet, the recipe sounded so easy and tasty, I had to make them as a Thanksgiving dessert.

Here are the modifications I made:

Rather than bittersweet chocolate chips I used dark chocolate chips.
I have no idea what amaretti cookies are so standing in the baking aisle at Wal-mart I Googled and found out an amaretti cookie is a coconut macaroon so found some generic, hard macaroon.
Didn't use the confectioner's sugar (didn't have it in my pantry).

You can see the result - yum!

Also made for Thanksgiving were Ina Garten's Cheese Straws she's also known as the Barefoot Contessa). Well, I really didn't make them, I watched and video taped Stephanie make them (had Thanksgiving dinner with her, her husband and some of other family members). Do Politics and Money Mix?

Politics. The more I try to learn and understand the less it makes sense.

"Government isn't common sense," I've been told when I question why things are done a particular way.

Last week by a 4 to 1 vote our County Commission voted to eliminate at least 20 some jobs in exchange for a lawn maintenance contractor because over two years, this will allegedly save the County 2.5 million dollars.

Wow. 2.5 million dollars is a lotta money especially for taxpayers. But, let's look at this logically. Will eliminating 20 jobs save the government overall? I suspect these 20 workers will be claiming unemployment - where does that money come from? They'll probably qualify for food stamps and the utility bill support program. I wonder, will government money be supporting them? Hmmm, where does the government get their money for these support programs? Perhaps, could it be, the tax payer? (*sarcasm*)

Then, they won't be stimulating the economy because they won't have jobs and extra income to not only buy necessities but also the splurges. These 20 probably won't be dining out in the restaurants or engaging in recreational activities requiring a fee (yes, there are plenty of free things to do). Since they won't be driving to work, they won't be buying as much gas. The reduced and lack of spending means the County tax base will be reduced.

"But," you say, "the new contractors will be contributing to the County tax base."

Really?

If the County is saving on one end, this means the contractors probably won't be making as much money as the employees meaning they will have less discretionary income to spend in the County which again means, reduced tax base. These contract workers probably won't have medical benefits either which means if they get ill, they'll be congesting the emergency rooms rather than visiting a doctor's office or clinic and the government will be paying their bills.

Will these workers be making enough to put food on the table? Maybe not, perhaps even though they'll be employed they will need government assistance for food or other services.

I could continue with my rant but unemploying 20 people for what seems like cheaper labor doesn't make sense when looking at the big picture. And this, my friends, is coming from a taxpayer.

'To Japan With Love' - It's Finally Here!

Whisker Away from Being Crazy Cat Lady

One more. That's all it'll take to push me into the crazy "cat"-egory.

Three cats in the possession of single woman is the definition of a crazy cat lady, at least according to ABC's 20/20 and the story they ran last week called, "The Line Between Cat Fancy and Cat Crazy."

Friday was one of those feeling sorry for myself nights and tuned into 20/20 where domestic violence was the apparent theme. What can be a better ego-booster than watching stories about women in abusive relationships knowing being single, I can do what I want and no one is beating up on me or trying to kill me?

The first story was about teenager who had her jaw blown off by jilted ex-boyfriend in an attempt to kill her. The end segment was a follow up story on Rhianna and the impact her interview the week prior (about Chris Brown beating on her and saying buh-bye to him) had on other women in abusive relationships.

And the middle story? About crazy cat ladies. Watching I realized I'm one cat and one whisker away from being a crazy cat lady! Sure, I joke about it and purposely limited my cat collection to two - although they were unplanned acquisitions - but didn't realize the universe has set parameters into the dynamics of being a crazy cat lady.

I'm pretty certain terms like "pathetic" and "lonely" were used during the piece. Ouch! How insulting to single women with any number of cats. The filmmaker who documented the lives of four cat ladies has apparently deemed herself an expert in determining what makes a crazy cat lady and according to her I'm on the brink!

Yikes! As if I'm not self conscious about living single and all the insecurities associated with that (like people starring at me while dining alone) I now need to worry about others thinking of me as the crazy cat woman on the brink when I'm shopping for gallons of cat litter and Fancy Feast.

So what am I gonna do about it? Not quite sure. I'm definitely going to make an assertive effort to socialize more - with humans, not felines - and post fewer photo of my fur-children, err... my two kitties.

Supberb Saturday in Sarasota

Yesterday can be summed up as "superb." I spent the the day in Sarasota, my old stomping grounds, experiencing some of what's new and enjoying some of my old favorites.

It started with picking up a ticket for Stephen King's talk at the Van Wezel Monday night along with voucher to purchase a signed copy of Under the Dome, which was released Nov. 10. The deal was brokered via eBay and while I should have faith in the credibility of eBay users, I was leery in the deal. Alas, all ended well.
Next was a visit to the Sarasota Farmers Market and an event called Sarasota Naturally with all sorts of tips for living well. A visit to Anna's (128 N. Orange) for lunch was next - my favorite Sarasota sandwich shop. They have delicious signature sandwiches like the "Surfer" (ham, turkey, swiss cheese and cucumber stacked on their unique "Can Bread" and topped with Anna's sauce). It's been about 5 years since having an Anna sandwich and although I craved the Surfer, opted for the Fiesta - liverwurst, salami, swiss cheese and onion on pumpernickel bread. Yum! (Pictured)

Sarasota is the new baseball spring training home of the Baltimore Orioles and yesterday was Orioles Family FanFest for both the residents and Orioles organization to get to know each other. Hall of Famer Jim Palmer was present along with manager Dave Trembley and players Brad Bergesen, Jim Johnson, Adam Jones, and Nolan Reimold.

The afternoon included a free hot dog, soda, ball cap, a fan forum with Q&A, and autograph session. Drawings were held for prizes, too. Getting caught up in the excitement, I gathered autographs, too, and need to figure out who to give them to. Up next was a trip to the theatre, the movie theatre that is for The Men Who Stare at Goats - loved it! Smart comedy.

And, the evening was topped off with the inaugural roller derby bout for the Sarasota Roller Girls. It was good catching up with friends who also came out to see Sarasota history in the making. Considering the team's been around for three months, losing 182 to 61 to Fort Myers Derby Girls ain't THAT bad. They have plenty of time to train and prepare for 2010. I captured some video and have one posted on YouTube right now, check it out.

I spent most of the day alone although I was constantly around people. I saw former colleagues during FanFest and it was great catching up with them and meet new people. As I write this it's Sunday night (which most of the day was spent preparing for company) and I'm saying goodbye to another weekend. I have the Stephen King lecture to look forward to tomorrow and will have a short work-week before taking on the next adventure.

November Life Stream Update: Not Much

What have I been up to? "This and that" I like to say. That's because I really can't pinpoint what I've been doing lately other than being a slug. *sigh*

It's that time of year - the holidays. I should have been at roller derby practice tonight but wasn't feeling up to it. Not sure if it was because I ate some bad sushi or just the desire to hole up and hide away from the world.

This is the time of year when I'm reminded of singleton status and constantly wonder what's wrong with me. I wonder why I attract guys who...well, suppose I shouldn't proceed with what I'm really thinking. Not sure why this bothers me so much or perhaps, why I'm so deficient in this aspect of life. I seem to excel in everything else except relationships which seems to be the most important part of life.

So....

I have decided to take all my wacky life experiences over the past few years and use it as "research" for a chick lit novel. Will I ever get it finished? I hope so. I found a useful outline to help me accomplish this, I just need to DO IT!

I also received a copy of German Level 1 from Rosetta Stone (FTC Disclosure - this was received as a gift from the Rosetta Stone representative as part of attending TBEX 09) and need to crack that open, too. Would like to hit Europe next year for the 40th birthday especially since 2009 was a year without international travel for me.

Next week company is coming and I need to make reservations for that - Orlando hotel, etc.

Suppose the biggest news is the leather sofa I purchased today. This was a big step for me as I wanted to buy a place first before having "adult" furniture. I'm still renting and the new piece of furniture will arrive sometime in December.

For now, I'm in slug mode and it may take until Feb. 15, 2010, to snap out of it but for my sanity, (and for my readers) I hope not.

Bradentucky Bombers Roller Derby League Walking to Raise HIV and AIDS Awareness

Local Roller Derby Girls Supporting 4th Annual Sarasota/Manatee AIDS Walk

Bradentucky, Fla. (November 09, 2009) – Members of the Bradentucky Bombers Roller Derby League will join other Southwest Florida residents to raise money to fund local HIV and AIDS awareness efforts and support programs during the 4th Annual Sarasota/Manatee AIDS Walk benefiting Trinity Charities on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates about 1.1 million Americans are living with HIV or AIDS. Locally, Trinity Charities offers various support programs for those infected and affected by the virus.

Roller derby fans are encouraged to register and join the Bradentucky Bombers for the two mile walk at the New College campus in Sarasota. Registration is between 8 and 9 a.m. at the Sudakoff Center (5845 General Dougher Place, Sarasota) with the walk following. Food, raffles, music and prizes are included in the morning activities. The walk is co-chaired jointly by Trinity Charities and New College. Online registrations are being accepted at www.trinitycharities.org.

For those unable to walk they can support a walker or a registered team. All they need to do is select “Support a Walker” from the walk registration section of www.trinitycharities.org and choose whether to support an individual walker, a team, or the walk.

Domestic Diva Sunday! Pot Roast and Banana Muffins

I love lazy weekends and this one was no different. Got in a little cleaning, minimal blogging (check out SoloTravelGirl.com for the latest), zero exercise (with the exception of a walk to CVS) and some cooking today. Today's culinary creations: pot roast, banana muffins, and corn muffins.

I've never made a pot roast and successfully accomplished the task today with my crock pot. Used the locally raised grass-fed beef and followed this recipe on About.com. It was incredibly simple and results are oh, so delish! The beef is so tender it's falling off the bone. Yum!

After putting the goods in the crock pot this morning I made a batch of banana walnut muffins using this recipe on the Cat Can Cook blog. I modified it a bit and used 4 bananas, 1 cup of sugar, 1 teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice, and included chopped walnuts in the dough and on top. In the immortal words of Rachael Ray, yummo!

Decided I needed cornbread muffins and since I have four boxes sitting in the pantry, pulled one out. They turned out OK but are the consistency of sedimentary rocks! They aren't hard as granite and don't necessarily crumble but they aren't soft. Cheese I had on hand in the freezer was added and rather than cow milk used vanilla soy milk. Maybe that had something to do with it! But, drenched in honey they taste alright.

Dinners for the week? Check, done!

Gone Rogue Island: #2 Scarecrow in Wickford, R.I., is #1 in My Book

This is the best scarecrow I've seen in a long time, "Gone Rogue Island- Miss Sarah Palin." It was entered in the Wickford (R.I.) scarecrow contest this year and like last year's presidential elections, took second place. Ms. Gone Rogue Island is the creation of Ms. Melissa Devine, a friend of my boss. The Headless Horseman, also pictured, took first place and I don't know who's responsible for him.

And since it's Halloween, thought I'd pimp out some of my spooky travel related experiences, such as the evening I spent in a Tallahassee cemetery with paranormal investigators, or a list of my favorite Voodoo haunts in New Orl eans. Since I'm one always up for a good ghost tour, here's a review of last year's Savannah midnight ghost tour and finally, a list of ghost hunting hot spots in Northeast Florida.

And speaking of ghost tours, I joined Historic Ghost Tours of Punta Gorda (Florida) this evening for a cemetery walk, stay tuned to SoloTravelGirl.com for a summary of that experience.

Unleashing Creativity with Bisque It in North Port, Florida

Although I should have been in bed Friday night I joined my friend Kathy at Bisque It Studio (14812Tamiami Trail, North Port; Tel: 941/423-5955) a paint your own pottery studio. They supply the raw ceramic items, paints, and paint brushes. For a small fee, visitors paint their masterpieces. It's not quite like paint-by-numbers but simple. The finished product is left to be baked in a kiln and picked up a few days later.

Friday night was "Ladies Night," which is offered every so often. Some gals brought food, wine and friends. I tagged along with Kathy and her friends and found a table in the corner sharing with another group of ladies.

The most difficult decision I had to make that night was WHAT to paint. There were generic items such as pitchers, bowls, and plates along with holiday items. Once my creativity was unleashed, I ended up painting two items and get to pick them up Tuesday.

I Don't Have Swine Flu, Really

Wearing a surgical mask so not to spread germs is all fine and good if there are germs to spread but for the one wearing it with breathing issues, it's no fun. I had the pleasure of this experience Friday when at 8:37 a.m. I secured the only appointment at the County health clinic for the day (9 a.m.) and upon arriving, since I was coughing, was instructed to don the unfashionable mask. There was also a sign indicating if patients have flu-like symptoms (fever, cough, sore throat) to put them on.

So I sat in the corner of the waiting room trying to breathe through the mask. Already hot from fever, breathing into the mask intensified my uncomfortableness but being a good patient, I suffered until the nurse pulled me in to take my vitals. We both agreed it was most likely a sinus infection that had taken over my head and making my life miserable. She allowed me to toss the mask - yay!

"I don't think you have the flu," the doctor told me.

I knew I didn't but since I was having problems breathing during the week and getting winded while walking up my stairs, thought it'd bring peace of mind.

I left with a Z-Pack and returned to the office although I wanted to head home and bed. I wanted to do that all week but had commitments to keep including a presentation last Thursday. Am I that important? Maybe.

Happy to report I can breathe, am not winded, and have regained my strength but the coughing has intensified and very annoying. As to other things in my life...

Coinciding with the October release of the roller derby movie Whip It, directed by Drew Barrymore, and the sport’s growing popularity, the Bombers have dubbed the bout with the movie’s title. The bout will take place at Florida Wheels (3611 3rd Street, W. Bradenton, Fla.) and rolls at 6:15 p.m. Tailgating begins at 5 p.m. with free beer provided by The Distillery Tavern. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door.

Fans, those curious about the sport, and those who remember roller derby of yesteryear are invited to come see female skaters who are sweet teachers, administrators, and business owners by day and hard-hitting roller derby girls by night. What's Shaking this Week? Derby Flick, Ken Burns National Park Documentary

I admit to being a slug towards my blogs lately, still trying to find my groove - how long does this take? I've also seriously looked at moving forward at writing a book. Know it won't be a best seller but perhaps some enjoyable chick-lit. Stay tuned to see if I can dedicate myself to the task.

Last night I attended a sneak peek of the roller derby movie Whip It directed by Drew Barrymore and starring Juno's Ellen Page. It was cute coming-of-age flick. Not a hardcore roller derby movie but decent, check out my review. Did receive a cool t-shirt - which is pictured.

Also, the much anticipated documentary by Ken Burns called The National Parks: America's Best Idea kicks off tonight on PBS. I received an advanced copy of the 12-hour documentary and have been watching it as much as possible throughout the weekend to review and tie to an upcoming article about camping in the national parks. Stay tuned.

Got Kitsch? Allee Willis Museum of Kitsch Launches Today!

Today's a fabulous day for those of us who appreciate the kitsch side of life. You know, those special treasures from pop culture as original pink lawn flamingos, classic Charlie's Angels lunchbox or the plastic fish coasters I have in my living room (pictured). Today the Allee Willis Museum of Kitsch launched today (www.AWMoK.com) as a 24/7 museum where Willis shows off her amazingly large collection of kitsch. Yup, it's an online museum. How kitsch is that?

Visitors to the Allee Willis Museum of Kitsch can submit digital images of their own kitsch artifacts in what's called Kitschenette – the social space for Akitschionados from around the globe to interact. Several kitsch goodies have been submitted and to date those earning the Allee Willis Certifikitsch of Authenkitschity include: Lady Lipstick, a lipstick holder which has a little ceramic mermaid atop a ceramic bowl (?) to hold tubes of lipstick and Tired Ashtray for Your Butts – an ashtray which looks like a toilet and now being used to hold Q-tips and makeup brush.

So who is Allee Willis? Know the song, "Boogie Wonderland" and "September" sung by Earth, Wind & Fire? Willis wrote those. We must be kindred spirits, I LOVE "September!" Could I Have Been a Victim or Did the Dude Have Innocent Intentions?

While traveling I'm alert and aware of my surroundings. My guard us up and using a phrase an Afghanistan security once said to me, I'm always "keeping my head on a swivel."

I rarely think bad things will happen to me while at home especially at 10 o'clock in the morning but the more I think about what happened yesterday the more freaked out I am about the incident.

Here's the deal: I'm walking to gym and just barely outside the apartment complex when a van pulls over and honks his horn at me.

"I need directions to Bank of America...I need gas and need to go to the bank for money...I'm heading to Ft. Myers and ran out of gas on the highway and the police gave me a gallon's worth."

I gave him directions to Bank of America while I stood away from the van. There was a black brief case in the front seat. I had my iPhone and was getting the exact address - which there are two a straight shot from where we were. And, he just passed three banks and numerous
gas stations. If he had a debit card he could've used it at any of those.

"Why don't you get in the van and ride with me to the bank?"

"No," I said, definitely beginning to be a bit freaked. I mean, who in the 21st century gets in a van with a stranger?

"I'm not going to do anything," he replied, "I need money for gas...can you give $5 and I'll repay you?"

"No, don't have any money on me, which was the truth.

"Fine," he said and drove off. As he did I snapped this photo - notice no tag on the van but think there's one in the window.

Do you think this was someone legitimately needing fuel or someone with other intentions?

Last month the spirit - and odd cravings - moved me to try chocolate covered bacon, it wasn't bad. I dipped pan-fried bacon into melted Hershey's Dark Chocolate Chips. Unfortunately, think I put the chocolate on too thick because it overpowered the bacon flavor - I'll learn for next time. And if you're into all things bacon, be sure to check out Baconfest Chicago on Saturday, Oct. 24.

Last weekend's creation was a doughnut hamburger inspired by an entree at Portland, Oregon's Voodoo Doughnut. And no, I haven't tried the real Voodoo burger, I'm kicking myself for not making it to the popular doughnut shop during my trip out there two years ago. Just means I'll have to make another trip to Portland and soon.

So my doughnut creation is pictured, doesn't it look tasty? It's a Publix glazed doughnut split in half with a hamburger made from my grass-fed beef using a Julia Child burger recipe. It's topped with Asiago cheese - left over from the linguine and shrimp dinner - bacon and sauteed spinach. And the taste? Nice combination of sweet, savory and salty yet one flavor doesn't overpower the other. Not sure what I should name it, any suggestions?

My Publix Grape magazine arrived last week and the cover showing plump shrimp atop linguine with spinach, pine nuts and mushrooms made my mouth drool. The recipe read as though it was easy so I opted to prepare it Friday during my day off then served it to a couple of friends on Saturday night. The verdict - definitely a crowd-pleaser! Although, the shrimp were a bit rubbery probably from being re-heated in the microwave. But, it went unnoticed.

Later this week I'll share what I prepared today - one of the most out-of-the-box entrees I think I've ever made and it was yummy!

Okay, I thought maybe the recipe for this would be on the Publix site but wasn't so here goes:

Ingredients
12 ounces fresh or frozen shrimp, peeled and deveined (I used frozen)
8 ounces dried linguine pasta (I used angel hair pasta - it's what I had on hand)
3/4 cup chicken broth (I purchase it in a box so I can freeze the rest for future use)
1/2 cup dry sherry or chicken broth (I didn't use either but used burgundy I had on hand from the Julia Child recipe prepared last month)
2 tablespoons lemon juice (I use the juice from the plastic yellow lemon)
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper (Oops! Had issues with this and accidentally dumped in more than necessary)
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup pine nuts
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon olive oil
1.5 cups sliced fresh mushrooms (4 ounces)
1 tablespoon butter
4 cups fresh baby spinach leaves (stuff from the bags works well!)
1/4 cup freshly grated Asiago cheese (1 ounce)

Step One: Thaw shrimp, rinse and pat dry. In large pot cook pasta.

Step Two: In a small bowl, combine 3/4 cup chicken broth, wine (or more broth), lemon juice, crushed red pepper, salt and set aside.

Step Three: Heat olive oil in large skillet, when hot cook shrimp, pine nuts and garlic over medium heat for 2 to 3 minutes or until shrimp are opaque. Remove mixture from skillet in another bowl.

Step Four: Heat butter in skillet, when hot add mushrooms and cook for 3 minutes or until nearly tender. Add broth mixture to skillet and bring to boil. Reduce heat and boil gently uncovered for 5 minutes. Add shrimp mixture to skillet and heat through.

Step Five: Add shrimp mixture from skillet and spinach to the pasta. Toss well and pour into a serving bowl and sprinkle with Asiago cheese.

For the first time since installing the Google App I've figured how to make a blog post which means for those times I'm traveling or too lazy to pull out the laptop, I can type away wherever and whenever. I realize this isn't a new feature but in previous attempts I haven't been able to pull up the keyboard to input content. Not sure why things are different now but ain't technology grand?

Bradentucky, Fla. (August 27, 2009) – The Hot Summer Fights roller derby bout on August 23 at Bradenton’s Florida Wheels Skate Center was an opportunity for the Bradentucky Nuclear Bombshells to redeem themselves over the Gainesville Roller Rebels. Sadly, the Rebels were victorious over the Bombshells, 120 to 78.

It all started once upon a time - well, May 17, 2009, to be exact – when the Bradentucky Nuclear Bombshells caravanned to Gator Country with a mission of taking on the Gainesville Roller Rebels on their home track. The result was a Rebels victory and their first-ever win. On a quest for a vengeance, the Bombshells trained their skates off for the past three months in anticipation of a rumble rematch to defend their home winning streak. Unfortunately for the Bombshells, the Rebels had been training for Hot Summer Fights, too.

Although the Bombshells put up an incredible fight, they were outskated by the Rebels. Lead jammer positions during the first three jams were captured by the Bombshells, Nikki Strick-9 and Yakuza Girl, yet the Rebels outscored the Bombshells thanks in part to the incredible Gainesville walls. The first half saw 18 jams while the second half had 17.

Gainesville’s lineup consisted of blockers Black-Out Brady, Handi J, Hershall Stalker, Laura Ingles Piledriver, Lethal Dose, Matriarch, Patsy Close Line, and PocaHotAss. Serving double-duty as blockers and jammers, as proper roller derby girls do, were Suzie Bonebreaker, Brawlin Brat - a Fort Myers Palm City Punishers skater making a special appearance - and Demonimia. Also making a special appearance from Fort Myers in the Gainesville line up was blocker AliSkater.

Bradentucky Nuclear Bombshells’ blocker lineup consisted of Co-Captain Prosehack, Blaque Jac, Dita Von Cheats, Malice in Rollerland, Shitz N. Giggles, Suicidoll Hotline. Alternating between jammer and blocker positions for the Bombshells were Diva Does Derby, Ester Gin N’Juice, LuLu LaRue, Nikki Strick-9, Signal 20, Toxic DeMeaner, and Yakuza Girl. Making her first ever roller derby bout appearance was a true terror on the track, Ariel Nightmare. Co-Captain Mia Psycho, Vixen de CrusHer and Head Coach Bryan Wilkes kept the Bombshells in check.

To say Hot Summer Fights was a physical bout is an understatement. Both teams demonstrated they could hit and girls frequently ended up in the suicide seating zone. The Gainesville Roller Rebels’ win can be attributed to the cohesive game-play. Although most times their jammer was left to fend for herself, the Rebels’ solid wall and angle blocks limited the Nuclear Bombshells scoring efforts and kept many of the girls falling within the track.

Unfortunately, the Bombshells’ Malice in Rollerland and Blaque Jac didn’t finish the bout due to injuries sustained on the track but they went down fighting. Indeed, Aug. 23 was a sad day for the Bradentucky Nuclear Bombshells, especially on the home track, but a learning experience to move forward in kicking more roller derby butt.

First Half Highlights:

Twenty seconds into the bout’s first jam, the Bombshells’ Nikki Strick-9 captured the lead jammer star yet the Rebels demonstrated some fancy skate work and moves when Matriarch slung Suzie Bonebreaker to advance her to the front of the pack leaving the score Bradentucky 2, Gainesville 5;

The third jam was a power one for Gainesville as Nuclear Bombshells’ Yakuza Girl was serving time in the penalty box for bad behavior during jam #2. The Bombshells prevented the Rebels’ Demonimia from breaking through the pack and once Yakuza Girl was released, she showed off her stealth ninja skills and with blocking assistance by Nikki Strick-9, easily captured the lead jammer position;

Diva Does Derby demonstrated sassy diva blocking on the track during the sixth jam as she helped push Nikki Strict-9 through the pack with Signal 20 and Ditea Von Cheats executing a barrage of hits against the Rebels;

Suzie Bonebreaker captured lead jam status for the Rebels during the seventh jam with the Bombshells’ Shitz N. Giggles and Arial Nightmare sitting in the penalty box. Prosehack and Suicidoll Hotline executed tag-team blocking to slow Suzie;

Jam 11 was a boondoggle of mayhem with derby girls hitting the floor every which way. Ester Gin N’Juice battled for lead jammer status against Suzie Bonebreaker with Suzie capturing the lead star. Diva Does Derby placed a solid block on Matriarch which allowed Ester to break through the pack.

Yakuza Girl showed off her karate concentration and agility by weaving in and around the Gainesville pack to capture the lead jammer status during jam 13;

Brawlin Brat was the queen jammer during jam 14 while PocaHotAss stuck to Bradentucky’s jammer Toxic DeMeaner like fly paper until Poca “accidently” tripped the Bratt;

Bradentucky had the power during jam 17 with Nikki Strict-9 jamming alongside blockers Suicidoll, Prosehack, Diva and Signal 20. Gainesville was on the defensive yet Signal surprised Hershall Stalker with a hit that vibrated throughout the rink.

Second Half Highlights:

Angels could be heard singing as Bradentucky took the lead during jam 3 thanks to Signal 20 as lead jammer and solid hits from Shitz, Arial and Nikki. Jam ended Bradentucky 60, Gainesville 58;

Two Bombshells were in the penalty box during jam 5 yet Signal 20 was the lead jammer relying on LuLu LaRue and Nikki Strict-9 to slow the Gainesville derby girls;

Suzie Bonebreaker secured lead jammer status during jam 7 with the Bombshells highlight coming from Esther Gin N’Juice’s defensive moves to slow Suzie. Unfortunately for the Bombshells, following this jam they would no longer lead the game;

Ester Gin N’Juice captured the lead jammer star over Brawlin Brat but her run was rudely disrupted when Gainesville’s Hershall Stalker illegally pushed her off the track;

The century mark was met during jam 13 for Gainesville with Suzie Bonebreaker as lead jammer and the jam ended Bradentucky 74, Gainesville 100.

It’s not very often sports announcers receive recognition but the ones at Hot Summer Fights deserve it. Side of Bacon with Bradentucky and Glyph from Gainesville definitely earn gold stars for their entertaining banter throughout the bout. Commentary covered everything from roller derby strategy to spa treatments to karaoke. Where else but roller derby can this kind of entertainment be enjoyed?

Before the Bombshells skated in their last bout of the season, roller derby fans kicked back cold ones during a lively tailgating party in the rink’s parking lot compliments of Bradenton’s The Distillery Tavern. Prior to the game’s 6 p.m. start, Johnny SxFk infused the rink with a rockin’ beat.

See the Bradentucky Bombers and Nuclear Bombshells on Sunday, October 18 at 6 p.m. at Florida Wheels in Bradenton. This will be an interleague bout associated with the upcoming movie release of Whip It, which is about an indie-rock loving misfit finds a way of dealing with her small-Texas town by joining a roller derby league. The movie is Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut.

Cooking Up a Frenzy with Julia Child

Not since I was a kid and obsessed with "Star Wars" has there been a movie that's inspired me. While "Stars Wars" inspired me to ... well... not sure what it sparked in me other than collect action figures, cards and write faux scripts...the flick "Julie and Julia" has inspired me to cook.

Days after seeing the movie I ran out to the local Books-A-Million for Mastering The Art of French Cooking, Volume One (1) (Vol 1). Now, I was almost CERTAIN my Grandma had this book and thought perhaps I now inherited it but checking my book shelf, couldn't find it so it was off to BAM where the cooking aisle was overwhelming with pomp and flash from young gun chefs on the Food Network. There were tons of Rachel Ray cookbooks and Guy Fieri's book was prominently on display but I couldn't find the Julia Child cookbook.

After seeing "Julie & Julia" I have a new appreciation and fondness of Julia Child. She seemed to be an ordinary woman head over heels in love with her husband and vice versa. Now, the celebrity chefs don't seem important. They seem superficial with their easy, quick, 30-minute meals because the message behind the cookbooks seemed to be profit versus good food.

Disappointed I couldn't find Art of French Cooking, I wandered throughout the store and returned to the same aisle just in case I missed something. And then I heard the sound of angels - smack dab in the middle of a shelf standing upright was the cookbook! Not sure if it had been there all along or if staff just stocked it but in either case, I snatched it up.

Next was the hunt for a vintage apron and being impulsive, I forwent the Internet and headed straight to Goodwill where I found a suitable culinary garment.

Off to the grocery store because I didn't have all the ingredients or the cookware. I picked up a nice Paula Deen 3.5 Quart Cast Iron Covered Round Casserole which will come in handy. My cooking frenzy to make Boeuf Bourguignon (beef stew in red wine, with bacon, onions and mushrooms) began at 10 p.m. and either I was channeling Julia Child or was working on late-night adrenaline because I felt like a master chef sauteing and flipping mushrooms, browning pearl onions and cubing my grass-fed beef. By 3:30 a.m., the dish was complete and the aromas infused the apartment in a good way.

Since it's just me, I've been feasting on my homemade creation since Thursday night, not a bad thing. I'm now plotting my next dish, perhaps an nice chicken dinner.

Big Brother 11: Ice Cream Sandwiches Almost Like Lydia's

Once again I'm sucked into another season of Big Brother. Although the CBS reality show isn't commonly associated with cooking, a Big Brother After Dark episode inspired me to make ice cream sandwiches almost like the ones house guest Lydia - the tattooed special effects makeup artist - made.

Lydia's Ice Cream Sandwiches:
Chocolate Chip Cookies - looked as though she baked them in a pan then cut them into squares.
Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream

My Jazzed Up Version:
Chocolate Chip Cookies - I used the Hershey chocolate chip recipe on the bag and used dark chocolate chips.
Blue Bunny Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream
My Secret Ingredient:

Version 1: melted chocolate chips and spread the chocolate on the flat side of each cookie then plopped the ice cream;
Version 2: Hershey's chocolate syrup spread on the flat side of each cookie then dropped the ice cream.

Chocolate Sprinkles

Viola! The Big Brother 11 ice cream sandwich is pictured up top. Look close to see the melted chocolate. And the taste? Definitely a crowd-pleaser. A friend who's a big fan of Lydia was my taste tester and he said both varieties were winners. I realize I have an upper hand over Lydia since the only secret ingredient she probably has is Big Brother slop and maybe an anchovy or two.

Fix yourself a batch for Thursday's eviction, should be another heated episode.

I Can't Tell You About Woodstock, But Mexican Trailrunner Can

Travel is about experiences and meeting new people. When I journeyed to Mexico last November to visit barb, she introduced me to a friend of her's who now has a blog called Mexican Trailrunner. Okay all you groovy Sarasota peeps, find the flower-power love to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Woodstock with the band Yesterdayze during Friday Fest on the Bay at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall on Friday, Aug. 28, 2009, between 5 and 9 p.m.

Spread the blanket out on the lawn, kick off those sandals and move and groove in your bare feet as blades of grass tickle your toes - almost like the original Woodstock - on the Van Wezel's lawn.

Yesterdayze, a six-person band (including one of my uncles!), will play the favorites from the 60s. Check out the band's site for more info about them and can you guess who's my uncle? And Mom, sorry, you can't reply!

BlogHer '09 Day 1: Soaking it In

Note: I originally wrote this past midnight last night (this morning) yet didn't get around to doing so. Apologies for the delay...

It’s just past midnight here in Chicago and day 1 of the BlogHer experience is settling in. There are about 1,400 attendees, all with the same passion. I’m wrapping my head around all that was discussed during the informational sessions but one immediate thought I had about the experience so far is: I’m so far behind in blogging. Four years ago when I started this blog, I had no idea how far ahead of the curve I was. And, that wasn't even my first go-around at blogging, I had another site before before blogs were widespread.

Just after one day, BlogHer has been a validation and inspiration. Met a woman who read and complimented my Tallahassee blog which validated why I started it. I've been inspired by the creativity in blog topics and how specific women have been able to turn a hobby into an income stream. It's also been fun seeing and meeting other bloggers/Twitterers I read and interact with.

But, while I was ahead of the curve four years ago by beginning this blog, somehow I’m behind the times. Most of the bloggers I met started their blogs within the past 18 months and have major sponsors supporting them. Granted, most are running mommy blogs and/or frugal blogs, which with the current economic conditions, makes sense, but on the flip side, what have I been doing wrong to be stuck in a rut? Perhaps the attendance skews more towards new bloggers than seasoned? Who knows. But here are thoughts as to why I haven't been successful and ways I can get back on the right blogging track:

Inconsistency. There, I said it. I've been inconsistent since about April or so and I'll be working on that by creating a schedule to carve blogging and posting time.

Marketing, or Lack Of. Which seems silly since my career is marketing yet, I haven’t elevated myself with my blogs. That’s changing because I invested in business cards and actually handed them out here. I now have a promise to potentially new readers.

Hate Rejection. One gal I spoke to this afternoon said she’s been blogging for less than a year and had a sponsor who gave a computer to giveaway. She said she also receives free vacations because she contacts loads of PR people to ask. She said for every 10, she receives nine “no’s” and one “yes.” I need to be proactive in soliciting sponsors and advertisers.

Been Throwing Spaghetti Against the Wall. QuirkyKitschGirl.com has been all over the board with topics ranging from living single to emotional feelings and travel to roller derby. QKGTallahassee.com was successful because it was a targeted niche, a micro-travel site encouraging things to see and do in Tallahassee and encourage travel to the destination. Seems as though niche blogs do better than across-the-board ones. Hence, SoloTravelGirl.com was launched. Let’s see where that flies in the next six months.

I've Under-valued My Skills. My jaw dropped when I heard what bloggers are being compensated per post. Wow. I've under-valued myself for both sponsored posts and writing/blogging for others. That'll change for future ventures.

As the conference wraps up, I'm sure to have other thoughts and ideas on moving forward.

Am I Unreliable?

No, just over-extended. As usual, my 'in-box' is full, quite full. I'm embarrassed that I've hardly had time to reply to emails, Facebook emails/notifications and Twitter since the weekend. I have loads of photos to upload on Flickr, need to write8 articles by the end of August with two of those August weekends consumed with business conferences, need to keep up with blogging for the client and really, really need to get www.SoloTravelGirl.com off the ground. Was hoping to hold a launch party in conjunction with the release of To Japan with Love: A Travel Guide for the Connoisseur (To Asia with Love) because I have at least two stories in it, but, the release date continues to be pushed back. Amazon is saying it's available Aug. 1. We'll see but if that's the case, I should've received my advanced copies by now.

Happy news, I'm heading to the BlogHer conference in Chicago this weekend, read about some of the celebs who'll be in attendance in 'Tide, Nikon Bringing Big Names to BlogHer '09.' Sunday is the Travel Blog Exchange (TBEX), a room full of the who's-who of travel bloggers. Can't wait!

I'll be live tweeting for both events so stay tuned (@jenniferhuber). And, thanks to some Facebook friends, I have some pretty cool questions to ask Mr. Tim Gunn. No, I didn't win the personal style consultation with him but I'm usually pretty good at working my way to the front of something and should be able to get within ear-shot and ask him a question or two.

Back to reliability. I'll tell ya what's unreliable, the apartment I'm paying nearly a grand a month to live in. Now the air conditioning is out. *sigh* At least I'll be in cooler elements but hope the fur children don't roast too much and hope the complex will actually fix it while I'm gone.

Gotta run. It's after 10 p.m. and I still have packing to do. Flight's at 7:30 a.m. which means, need to leave home by 5 a.m. Maybe I'll get 3 hours of sleep tonight.

Summer Slam Jam Roller Derby Bout Recap: Bradentucky Bombers 150, Ft. Myers Palm City Punishers 80

Summer Slam Jam was an opportunity for the visiting Fort Myers Palm City Punishers to redeem themselves after the Bradentucky Bombers defeated them 95 to 74 on their home rink during the June 28 Shove Her Solstice. While Fort Myers utilized the three weeks leading up to the bout for training, Coach Bryan Wilkes and his Bombers were doing the same and added not one but two secret weapons into Bradentucky’s arsenal, Poison Apple and Nikki Strick-9, both returning from maternity leave. These two roller derby girls combined with the team’s talented skaters resulted in a 150 to 80 Bradentucky Bombers victory during the Bombers’ last bout of the season at Bradenton’s Florida Wheels Skate Center on Sunday, July 19.

The first lap of the first jam was an indication on how the bout would end when the Bradentucky Bombers acted as proper hosts and kindly introduced the visiting Palm City Punishers to the track with blow after blow. The Bombers were in sync and getting the party started with the first jam Busty Bruiser whipped Signal 20 ahead of the pack into lead jammer status to capture 8 points compared to 4 the Punishers earned. From the Bomber’s perspective, speed and defensive blocking were the names of the game. Sixteen more jams later to the end of the first half, the home team roller derby girls were up 92 to 40.

The second half’s first jam set the pace for the rest of the bout and for the Punishers, it sure wasn’t pretty. The Bombers were up by two skaters because Heinz and the Ft. Myers jammer started in the penalty box. Heinz was serving time for hitting Bradentucky’s Kimical Warfare into a penalty box chair and into the rink’s back wall during the last jam of the first half. Without missing a step, Kimical quickly sucked it up and returned to the rink.

Signal 20 earned 5 points for the Bombers during the second half’s first jam which ignited a Ft. Myers mini-rally in the second jam when Jamsterella was lead jammer and racked up 4 points. This didn’t please the Bombers and from that point, the Bombers and particularly Julia Siezeher, Poison Apple and Snow Wipe U Out executed consistent hard-hitting blows on Ft. Myers skaters that were felt by spectators. Many jams left the Punishers scoreless thanks to the Bradentucky defensive wall.

Thanks to skillful Bradentucky Bomber blocking and lightning-speed jammers, the Punishers only claimed lead jammer status in six jams during the first half and five during the second. Heinz, Jamsterella, Lil’ Miss Slam Bags, Kannibal Kate and Klymaxxx. The 23 other jams went to Bradentucky with Gigi RaMoan, M.F. On Wheels, Signal 20, Ten Acious –C- and Yakuza Girl as lead jammers. Strategic blocking assistance from teammates Busty Bruiser, Esther Gin N’Juice, Heartbreaker Hilton, Julia Seizeher, Kimical Warfare, Mission Mary Position, Nikki Strick-9, Poison Apple, Snow Wipe U Out, and from the sidelines, captain Vixen da CrusHer, resulted in the Bradentucky Bombers victory.

Both teams competed with fierce determination but Bradentucky Bombers’ experience and fan support gave the home team an advantage. The Ft. Myers Best Blocker Award was given to Heinz 57 and Best Jammer to Lil’ Miss Slam Bags. The Bradentucky Bombers Best Blocker Award was presented to Poison Apple and Best Jammer to Signal 20.

Highlights of the First Half:

Just shy of 45 seconds into the second jam, Yakuza Girl quickly captured lead jammer status and scored 8 points for the Bombers;

It was as if Ten Acious-C- was wearing an invisibility cloak during the 4th jam because this little powerhouse jammer skated to lead status without any of the Punishers noticing, meanwhile Te Kill Ya Sunshine was welcomed to Bradentucky in Bomber-style with a little love tap into the center rink and into Bomber’s referee Viki Van Go;

The sixth jam belonged to Signal 20 since Klymaxxx was in the penalty box for 20 seconds due to bad behavior during the previous run yet, when she returned to the game, Bradentucky was in full jammer-hater mode and prevented her from scoring;

During the eighth jam, Mission Mary Position slowed Ft. Myers down with a powerful hit knocking a knee pad protector off an opponent while Gigi RaMoan demonstrated her cat-like agility and evaded a hit from the Punishers’ Flyin’ Da Brie who ended up gliding off the track;

Ft. Myers tried to derail M.F. On Wheels but she pushed and breezed through the pack making the sport look oh so easy during the 10th jam;

Highlights of the Second Half:

Making jamming look easy with her long strides, Gigi RaMoan surpassed the century mark in points for Bradentucky as she captured 4 points as lead jammer during the third jam (102/46);

Jamsterella was the sole jammer with M.F. On Wheels serving almost half the jam time in the penalty box for an infraction. With Poison Apple leading the blocking, Jamsterella never broke through the pack and the sixth jam was scoreless;

The eighth jam started with Snow Wipe U Out followed by Nikki Strick-9 in the penalty box and Ft. Myers was handed a power jam but didn’t know what to do with it. Gigi RaMoan fought her way through the pack and despite being bounced around like a pinball, Ft. Myers couldn’t stop her and she captured 8 points for Bradentucky;

Ten Acious – C- earned her lead jammer status with low blocking moves and prevented Ft. Myers jammer Kannibal Kate from earning it. In tag-team effort, Heartbreaker Hilton proved she was a jammer-hater and knocked the Ft. Myers jammer down. Ten Acious –C- was sent to the penalty box and Ester Gin N’ Juice showed Kannibal Kate the track belonged to Bradentucky during the ninth jam;

The 10th jam didn’t look good for Bradentucky with Nikki Strick-9, Heartbreaker Hilton and Ten Acious –C- all sitting in the penalty box. Jamsterella was the lead jammer but the Bombers returned by one back into defensive play. Snow Wipe U Out’s love tap sent Flyin’ Da Brie into the Ft. Myers’s bench and Busty Bruiser slowed Jamsterella to hold her to 8 points during a Punishers power jam.

Signal 20 began jam 12 in the penalty box which should have made it easy for Heinz to gain lead jammer status but Heartbreaker Hilton and Ten Acious –C- were on the track who took care of hitting and slowing the 57 sauce down. With 50 seconds left into the jam and Heinz still unable to break the pack, Signal 20 was dismissed from the penalty box and with what seemed as if it was with the greatest ease, she skated right into the lead jammer status.

Gigi RaMoan and Kannibal Kate battled for lead jammer status during the 13th jam. Snow Wipe U Out and Signal 20 orchestrated a series of beautiful hits on the Punishers’ jammer while Gigi skated to lead status;

Mission Mary Position made the night’s debut as the Bradentucky jammer during the 14th jam and although Jamsterella captured lead jammer status, Nikki Strick-9 cleared the way for Mary to advance through the pack and capture 4 points for the team;

M.F. On Wheels won the race for lead jammer in the 15th jam thanks to Poison Apple and Heartbreaker Hilton diligently playing their jammer-hater roles against Lil’ Miss Slam Bags;

With 30 seconds left in the game, the 17th jam set in motion with Yakuza Girl and Klymaxxx battling for the lead star position of the night. Ft. Myers threw blocks and hits in attempts to throw her out of the track, Yakuza displayed her amazing balancing and skating skills as she skated on one skate in order to stay within track boundaries and capture the last 2 points of the night.

Between jams 7 and 8 of the second half, Ft. Myers called a time out and the dance bug bit most of the skaters when “That’s Not My Name” by the Ting Tings infused the air. Even Coach Wilkes was infected with the groove bug and shimmied his hips with moves most haven’t seen.

Before the Bombers skated in their last bout of the season, roller derby fans kicked back cold ones during a lively tailgating party in the rink’s parking lot compliments of Bradenton’s The Distillery Tavern. Prior to the game’s 6 p.m. start, Nomads of the Nook infused the rink with its mix of avant-garde meets funk music.

Tim Gunn & Tide Want to Know What My Style Will Be During BlogHer '09

I've never been more excited about attending a conference than I am about attending BlogHer '09, July 23 – 26, in Chicago. For three years I've attempted to attend but my work schedule and universe were never in synch until now. (Insert sound of angels singing here.)

With each update received from BlogHer Command Central (in the form of BlogHer Attendee News sent from Lori Luna) my excitement has grown and last week was the big daddy of them all (although, I'm pretty excited danah boyd will be presenting) Tim Gunn will be in attendance, brought to the conference by Tide (MY detergent – Tide Coldwater, to be exact). [Insert SCREAM here!]

You know who Mr. Gunn is, the suave, witty, fashion guru and consultant and star of "Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style" and "Project Runway." A lover of words, I adore Mr. Gunn's robust and vibrant vocabulary. (Makes me wonder, does he enjoy crossword puzzles and playing Scrabble? Would he play a round of Boggle with me?) He's the guy every single gal would love to have as a friend when she needs a bit o'fashion advice or a suit (or tux) to wear on her arm to a art exhibition opening.

And so Tim Gunn and Tide want to know what I'll be wearing at BlogHer (as well the other attendees). See, I have a chance of winning a private style consultation with Tim Gunn in the Tide & Bounce Laundry Lounge during the conference. And everyone who knows me knows I’m a bit fashionably challenged. I really wish Garanimals made apparel for gals like me. Come on fashion industry, make it easy!

So what am I wearing to BlogHer '09? Unfortunately, I won't know until the night before after my laundry duties are complete and packing begins. I'm initially thinking cute little skorts and colorful tops but a big part of me is thinking of bringing my punk and campy roller derby look to the BlogHer show floor (hence the photo). Hey, I'm Quirky Kitsch Girl for a reason ;)

Wonder what Mr. Gunn would say to fishnets and combat boots.
